Dalgona Coffee is made up of instant coffee, water, sugar and milk. This delicious beverage is formed when you mix the correct measurement of coffee, water and sugar. The mixture is whipped using a whisk, mixer or spoon until it becomes frothy. Once the coffee is properly blended it becomes thick and creamy with a light coloured texture. The process of whipping the ingredients together releases air within the mixture and gives this coffee the “Whipped Coffee” name. 

Why Is It Called Dalgona Coffee? 

The name “Dalgona” is derived from a Korean honeycomb toffee sugar-sweet, though dalgona coffee doesn’t contain any of this toffee, it resembles it in taste and appearance. 

Where Is Dalgona Coffee From? 

Dalgona coffee first gained prominence on social networks like TikTok and Instagram in Do It Yourself (DIY) posts and recipes. It has become extremely popular due to the social distancing/quarantine order that has been implemented due to the Coronavirus.

The coffee has been called the “quarantine coffee” or “quarantine drink” since it has been the go-to coffee recipe during the quarantine. The name Dalgona was coined by a South Korean actor named Jung Il-woo who ordered a whipped coffee during his presentation on a Korean TV show known as “Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant) The actor compared the taste of the coffee to “Dalgona” a Korean honeycomb toffee sweet.

What Is Dalgona? 

Dalgona is known as a Korean honeycomb toffee candy that grew to fame after the Korean War in the 1950s. Making this candy was extremely affordable and parents would resort to making it for their children by heating baking soda, sugar and water. Once the mixture settled, it would become airy and sweet with a slightly bitter finish. 1

Who Created Dalgona Coffee?

While Dalgona Coffee is currently a social media sensation, the creation of whipped coffee can be a debatable topic. Many cultures have their variation of the “whipped coffee” that is made from instant coffee and sugar. The availability of instant coffee in parts of Eastern Europe, South America and Asia have made whipped coffee extremely popular. For instance in India, they call this hand beaten coffee “phenti hui coffee” and in the year 1957 another whipped coffee grew to fame known as the “frappe” in Greece. 

How To Make Whipped Coffee

So before we start, I’d like to go over a few things. It’s important that you use the correct instant coffee when trying to make this concoction. The best instant coffee is the granular type, you will have a very hard time trying to froth finely ground instant coffee. So, unless you want to be beating the mixture for over an hour to generate a tiny bit of froth, stick to the granular type. 

Also, If you are looking into using a blender, avoid using an immersion blender for generated heat from the mechanism will make your coffee taste bitter.

Ingredients

  • Hot Water
  • Instant Coffee (Granular Type)
  • Sugar
  • Whisk (Electric or Manual) or Spoon
  • Milk 
  • Ice
  • Your Favourite Glass

Instructions – How To Make Whipped Coffee

  • 1: Measure out and pour 2 Tablespoons of Granular Instant Coffee into a medium-sized bowl
  • 2: Add 2 Tablespoons of water and 2 Tablespoons of sugar into the bowl. 
  • 3: Now vigorously beat the mixture using your whisk or spoon. This may take up to 5 minutes (or longer if you’re using a spoon) for the mixture to reach that creamy foam texture. 
  • 4: Place some ice cubes into your glass
  • 5: Pour 3/4 a cup of cold milk into your glass 
  • 6: Spoon out your creamy Dalgona mixture on to your milk. 
  • 7: Take a photo or video for Instagram or TikTok
  • 8: Mix and enjoy! 

PRO TIP – Switch your milk to Almond/Soy/Oat or Chocolate milk for interesting flavors 

For extra flavour, you can also top your coffee with some chocolate or cinnamon powder and If you’re in the mood for a hot beverage you can swap the cold milk for hot milk.
