The Nespresso Aeroccino 3 is a small electric jug frother that sits on a cordless base and makes hot milk, hot milk foam or cold milk foam from a single button. Nespresso sells it in the US in black for $99.00, and it works with any coffee setup because it needs no machine to run. It froths up to 4.1 oz of milk, or heats up to 8.1 oz without froth.

What is the Nespresso Aeroccino 3?

It is a stand-alone milk frother: a stainless steel jug with a non-stick interior, a lid, a removable whisk and a slim base that carries the power connection. Nespresso describes it as "constructed from stainless steel and black plastic" and says it heats milk to between 160 and 170 degrees F. You do not need a Nespresso machine, an espresso machine or any other equipment, so it suits a pod machine, a moka pot, a French press or a drip brewer equally well.

Operation is one button. A short press starts a hot preparation and the button lights red. Holding it for about two seconds starts cold foam and the button lights blue. The frother switches itself off when the cycle ends.

How the Aeroccino 3 froths and heats milk

The jug takes one of two whisk parts. The mixer is used for hot milk, and a frothing spring clips onto the whisk for foam. The spring has a storage spot under the lid. You fill the milk to one of the two "Max" marks inside the jug, and the foam and hot milk capacities differ by a factor of two. Overfilling, or fitting the wrong whisk, is the cause of the overflow that the troubleshooting list mentions.

Nespresso recommends whole or semi-skimmed milk straight from the refrigerator, at about 39 to 43 degrees F, and heat-treated, freshly opened milk. Milk that has been frozen will not froth, and the maker advises against enriched, powdered or flavored milks. Syrup, sugar and chocolate powder should not go into the jug, because they can damage the coating. That also means there is no hot chocolate mode, and chocolate has to be stirred into the drink afterwards.

Foam capacity is the practical limit. At 4.1 oz of milk, one batch is enough for a latte or cappuccino, or for two small cortados, but a round of several large drinks means repeating the cycle.

Cleaning the Aeroccino 3

This is the part to check before buying. The jug, lid, seal, whisk and spring are washed by hand with detergent and warm water, and the maker states the unit is not dishwasher safe. The jug must not be immersed, and the underside and the base connector have to be dry before the next use. Nespresso says to use non-abrasive materials only, and a non-metal spoon to lift foam out. The non-stick coating is the reason, and a scratched coating is the usual end of a frother like this.

Nespresso Aeroccino 3 vs PowerLix Milk Frother Pro

The PowerLix Milk Frother Pro is a handheld whisk that costs $25.99 and runs on batteries. The Aeroccino 3 is a jug that heats the milk itself, so the two do different jobs. A handheld wand froths milk you have already warmed in a pan or microwave, in whatever cup you have. The Aeroccino 3 warms and froths in one go, stops by itself and leaves you free to pull a shot, at roughly four times the price.

Choose the handheld if you want the cheapest way to get foam and do not mind a second step for heat. Choose the Aeroccino 3 if you want hot milk and foam from a single press. The other jugs for the same drinks are compared in our milk frothers guide.

Is the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 worth it?

At $99.00 on Nespresso's own US page, it is priced as a premium frother, and the value case is convenience and the Nespresso name rather than capacity. It makes about 4 oz of foam per cycle, it is hand-wash only and its warranty is one year in the US manual. Those are fair trade-offs for a one-button, no-supervision frother, but they are worth knowing before you pay for it. If you froth one or two drinks a day and want a repeatable result with no technique, the price is easier to justify than if you froth occasionally.

Who should buy the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 (and who should not)

It suits someone who makes one or two milk drinks at a time, wants hot and cold foam without watching a pan, and has space for a 3.5 in wide base on the counter. It also fits people who already own a Nespresso machine and want a matching accessory, though it is not tied to one.

Skip it if you make hot chocolate often, if you need to froth for a crowd, or if you want to put everything in the dishwasher. A larger jug frother or a handheld whisk will serve those cases better.
