About coffee gear under $100

The useful way to read this band is as what it adds to under $50, because every one of those products is also here. The answer is not a better brewer. It is control over the two things that happen before the coffee touches water: how it is ground and how hot the water is.

Variable temperature kettles under $100

This is the band where a kettle you can set to 93C and have it hold there becomes available. It is the cheapest real upgrade in a filter setup because temperature is a variable most people never control at all, and boiling water is too hot for coffee. Variable temperature kettles lists them, and what temperature coffee water should be covers the numbers.

Hand grinders under $100

A hundred dollars buys a manual grinder with real burrs, minimal shaft play and a mechanism that holds its setting between uses. That last part is what separates it from the cheap ones: a grinder that drifts is a grinder you cannot learn. It will also out-grind most electric machines at twice the price, at the cost of a minute of your morning.

What you cannot get for under $100

Espresso, in any form worth having. Bean-to-cup machines. Electric grinders that can do espresso. Those live at under $500 and above, and the entry-level espresso machines that appear below that price are the ones whose pressurised baskets make crema out of a pressure trick rather than out of the coffee.

Where to spend your first $100 on coffee gear

If you have a decent brewer already, the ranking is: scale, then kettle, then grinder, then brewer. Most people do it in exactly the reverse order, which is why so many kitchens contain a good drip machine, a blade grinder and supermarket pre-ground.

How good a filter setup under $100 can be

At this money you can assemble a filter setup that makes coffee as good as anything in a specialty cafe, provided the beans are fresh. What you cannot do is make espresso, and no amount of clever shopping in this band changes that.

Frequently asked questions about coffee gear under $100

What does $100 buy that $50 does not?

Control rather than a better brewer. A variable temperature kettle you can set and hold, and a hand grinder with real burrs that keeps its setting. Both change the cup more than upgrading the brewer would.

Can you make espresso for under $100?

Not in any form worth having. The machines at this price use pressurised baskets that generate crema from a pressure trick rather than from the coffee, and they cannot be dialled in. Espresso starts being real several hundred dollars higher.

What order should I upgrade in?

Scale, kettle, grinder, brewer. Most people go in exactly the reverse order, which is how a kitchen ends up with a good machine, a blade grinder and stale pre-ground coffee.
