Coffee gear under $50

Under fifty dollars is the band where the honest advice is to buy manual. A pour over cone, a French press, a moka pot or a cezve at this money can be excellent, because they are simple objects with no motor to make cheap. An electric brewer at the same price has to find the savings somewhere, and it finds them in the heating element.

Why manual wins here specifically

A manual coffee dripper is a shaped piece of plastic, glass or ceramic with holes in it. The expensive versions are better made, not fundamentally different. A cheap electric drip machine, by contrast, often never reaches proper brewing temperature at all, which is why its coffee tastes thin however good the beans were. That is the single most common fault at this price and it is invisible on the box. SCA certified machines are the ones tested for it, and none of them are here.

Buy the scale before the brewer

The highest-value purchase in this band is not a brewer at all. A scale that reads to 0.1g costs very little and improves every cup you make on any equipment you already own, because consistency is most of what separates good coffee from lucky coffee. Weighing your coffee explains why.

What is missing at this ceiling

Electric grinders that can actually grind evenly, kettles you can set a temperature on, and anything that makes espresso. A hand grinder is the exception and a good one exists in this band; a cheap electric one is a blade machine or a burr grinder with too much play to hold a setting.

What the next fifty dollars buys

Under $100 is where a variable temperature kettle and a competent hand grinder become available, which between them change more about the cup than any brewer upgrade at this level.

How to spend it well

One good manual brewer, a scale, and the rest on coffee. Fresh beans through a simple brewer beat stale beans through a clever one every time, which is why a printed roast date is worth more than a feature list.
