Weighing coffee is the cheapest upgrade in brewing. Scoops measure volume, and volume varies with grind size, roast level and how the grounds settle, so the same scoop can hold noticeably different amounts of coffee. A scale removes that variable entirely, which is what makes a good cup repeatable instead of lucky.

0.1 grams, and why nothing coarser will do

A kitchen scale reading in whole grams is fine for flour and useless for espresso. A double shot is around 18g of coffee, and one gram either way is a five per cent change in dose that you can taste.

Every scale worth buying reads in 0.1g steps. Watch for a separate figure, the minimum detection weight, which is the smallest load the scale registers at all. A scale can read in 0.1g steps and still ignore everything under half a gram, which matters when you are timing an espresso from the first drop.

Capacity decides whether it is a coffee scale or a scale

Most espresso scales stop at 2000g. That covers a dose, a cup and a brew, and nothing else. Some go to 3000g, and a few reach 6lb, which is enough to weigh a full bag of beans with the bag still on the platform, or to work as the only scale in the kitchen.

If you want one scale rather than two, capacity is worth more than any brewing feature. If it lives on a drip tray, it is irrelevant.

Thickness is the specification people forget

An espresso scale sits on the drip tray with a portafilter spout above it, and that clearance is fixed by the machine. Scales built for this are around 20mm thick. A general scale is closer to 30mm, and 10mm is the difference between fitting and not fitting.

Platform size is the same argument in the other direction. A pour over setup is a dripper on a server, and if the server overhangs the platform it wobbles and the reading moves with it. Espresso scales are deliberately small; pour over wants a wide one. Very few scales are good at both.

Timers, flow rate and what they are actually for

A built-in timer saves you a phone, and an automatic one that starts when it senses weight saves you a hand. Both are conveniences rather than measurements.

Flow rate is different. It shows grams per second arriving in the cup, and on espresso that is how you spot a channelled shot while it is running rather than after you taste it: a shot that suddenly gushes is finding a crack in the puck. It used to separate expensive scales from cheap ones and no longer reliably does.

Flow rate is only as good as the sensor behind it. A scale that takes a second to settle is showing you a number from a second ago, so a published response time matters more on a scale that advertises flow rate than on one that does not. Many sellers describe the sensor instead of publishing a figure.

Power, and why water resistance is usually a word rather than a rating

Rechargeable scales with USB-C are now the norm and avoid buying batteries, though a scale used for two minutes a day is exactly the device you forget to charge. Batteries never leave you stuck, at the cost of running out mid-pour.

Water resistance is measured on the IP scale, where IPX4 survives splashes and IPX7 survives immersion. Those are tested claims. "Waterproof" with no code behind it is an adjective, and a great many listings use the adjective and publish no rating. Treat any unrated scale as splash-shy, and note that a removable silicone mat is often what actually takes the spill.
