How to choose a coffee scale

Weighing coffee is the cheapest upgrade in brewing. Scoops measure volume, and volume varies with grind size, roast level and how the grounds settle, so the same scoop can hold noticeably different amounts of coffee. A scale removes that variable entirely, which is what makes a good cup repeatable instead of lucky.

A kitchen scale reading in whole grams is fine for flour and useless for espresso. A double shot is around 18 grams of coffee, and a gram either way is a five per cent change you can taste.

Full points. Half a gram scores less and whole grams score little.

Enough capacity

More than two kilograms scores full points and 500 grams or less scores least. That is the difference between a scale that weighs a dose and one that can weigh a full bag of beans or stand in for the kitchen scale.

Watch for the minimum detection weight too, the smallest load a scale registers at all. A scale can read in tenths and still ignore everything under half a gram, which matters when you are timing an espresso from the first drop.

Flow rate, the grams per second arriving in the cup, is how you spot a channelled shot while it runs, and it is only as good as the sensor behind it. A scale that takes a second to settle is showing you a number from a second ago, and many sellers describe the sensor rather than publish a figure.

An espresso scale sits on the drip tray with a portafilter spout above it, and that clearance is fixed by the machine. Scales built for this are around 20mm thick; a general scale is closer to 30mm, and 10mm is the difference between fitting and not. Platform size argues the other way: a pour over server that overhangs the platform wobbles, and the reading moves with it.
