How to choose a coffee bean

Coffee is the only thing on this site you buy again next month. A grinder is a decision you make once; a bag is a decision you make forty times a year, which is why a few pence a cup and a fortnight of staleness matter more here than any single spec does on a machine.

Roast date is the one thing worth checking first

We give freshness 20 points out of 100, second only to taste, and most of that rides on a single question: does the bag carry a roast date at all?

Coffee is at its best somewhere between three days and about a month after roasting. A best before date twelve months out tells you nothing about where in that window your bag sits, and a supermarket bag has usually spent months of it on a pallet. A printed roast date is the difference between knowing and hoping, and it costs the roaster nothing but honesty.

Specialty roasters print it. Large brands mostly do not. That gap is visible in the freshness score on every page here.

Price per kilo, because bag price is not comparable

A 250 g bag at $18 and a 907 g bag at $42 look like the big one is the expensive one. Per kilo they are $72 and $46, and the small bag is half as much coffee again in cost.

Every coffee page on this site shows price per kilo alongside the bag price, and a table of every format the roaster sells with the price of each. It is the same arithmetic you would do yourself at the shelf, done once and shown.

Pods cost about twice as much per cup

The most useful number that comparison produces. Taking Black Rifle's AK Espresso, sold as beans and as K-Cups by the same roaster:

5 lb bag works out at about $0.53 a cup
12 oz bag about $0.75 a cup
50-count K-Cup box about $0.86 a cup
12-count K-Cup box about $1.08 a cup

Identical coffee. The pod is roughly double the bag, and buying the largest bag rather than the smallest saves about 29 percent.

That is not an argument against pods. It is an argument for knowing what the convenience costs, and for buying the biggest box rather than the smallest if you have settled on pods anyway.

Flavoured coffee and tasting notes are two different things

A Kenyan tastes of citrus because of where it grew and how it was processed. A salted caramel coffee tastes of salted caramel because flavouring was added after roasting. Both are legitimate, and someone shopping for one is very often actively avoiding the other.

Most sites list them together, which makes both lists useless. Here they are separate: tasting notes describe the coffee, added flavour describes what was put on it. Filter by either.

Flavoured coffee also tends to cost more per kilo than the same roaster's plain line, which is worth knowing before you decide the flavour is free.

What we cannot score, and say so

Two of the six criteria carry no number on any page: taste and roast consistency. Nobody publishes a figure for either, and a proxy built out of roast level would be a guess wearing a score.

Those criteria show a dash rather than a zero, and their weight comes out of the total instead of counting against the coffee. A page that scored a coffee badly for something nobody measures would be worse than useless.

Whole bean if you can, ground if you will actually drink it

Ground coffee stales in days rather than weeks, so whole bean is better if you own a grinder. If you do not, buying ground is a better decision than buying beans you will not grind, and a decent burr grinder is the cheapest large upgrade available to most people.

Single origin or blend

A single origin comes from one country, often one farm, and tastes of somewhere. A blend is built to taste the same every time. Neither is better. Blends suit espresso and milk drinks, where consistency matters more than character; single origins reward filter brewing, where there is nothing to hide behind.

Sourcing carries 16 points here, and it rewards the roasters willing to name the farm, the process and the altitude rather than stopping at a country.

How long does coffee stay fresh after roasting?

Roughly three days to a month for whole bean, and a few days once ground. That window is why a printed roast date matters more than a best before date: a best before twelve months out cannot tell you where in the window your bag sits. Coffee does not become unsafe after that, it just flattens out and loses the aromatics that made it worth buying.

Are K-Cups more expensive than buying coffee beans?

Yes, and by roughly double. Comparing one roaster's identical coffee, a 50-count K-Cup box works out around $0.86 a cup against about $0.53 for the same coffee in a 5 lb bag. The convenience is real and so is the cost. If you have settled on pods, the larger boxes are meaningfully cheaper per cup than the 12-count.

What is the difference between flavoured coffee and tasting notes?

Tasting notes describe flavours the coffee already has from where it grew and how it was processed, so a Kenyan may read as citrus without anything being added.
