Direct trade coffee beans

Direct trade means a roaster says it buys green coffee straight from the farm, cooperative or exporter, rather than through the commodity market. Where it is real it usually means a better price to the grower and a better coffee in the bag. Where it is not, it means nothing at all, because no organisation defines the term and nobody audits it.

Nobody certifies this, which is the whole point to understand

Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and organic are certifications: there is a standard, an auditor and a logo somebody paid for. Direct trade is a description a roaster applies to itself. That is not automatically worse. Several of the best roasters avoid certification because the fee is a cost the farm ends up carrying, and they pay above the certified minimum anyway. But it does mean the words alone are worth nothing. What each certification label actually guarantees covers the other side.

What a real relationship looks like on the bag

The tell is specificity. A roaster with a genuine relationship can name the farm or the cooperative, the region, the altitude, the varietal and the processing method, and often the year they started buying there. A roaster using the phrase as decoration names a country and stops. Every one of those details is checkable, which is why the vague version stays vague.

Price is evidence, not proof

Direct trade coffee costs more than commodity coffee and should. But a high price is not evidence of anything on its own, and the useful question is what the roaster publishes about where it went. Some publish the price paid per pound. That is the strongest version of this claim anyone makes, and it is rare enough to be worth seeking out.

Who should care

Anyone buying at the medium-light end and paying specialty prices, because the sourcing and the cup quality travel together: a roaster who can get the same lot next year is a roaster whose coffee you can learn. If your coffee goes into milk every morning, the money is better spent elsewhere.
