How to tell what you are actually buying

Weight is the first signal and price is the second. Beyond those, most stainless is magnetic enough to hold a fridge magnet on a flat panel, and a plastic wrap will not. Manufacturers rarely lie outright; they describe a stainless steel accent or housing and let the photograph do the rest. Where a maker states the grade - 304 and 18/8 are the same thing, 18/10 is the same family - they are telling you it is real, because nobody quotes a grade for a laminate.

Fingerprints are the whole trade-off

Brushed steel shows prints along the grain and cleans with a wipe in the direction of that grain. Mirror-polished steel shows everything from every angle and is the reason so many kitchens have a cloth living next to the kettle. Where a machine offers both, brushed is the quieter object to own.

Why it matters beyond looks

Steel is inert, which is why every vacuum flask and most milk jugs are made of it. A steel body will not hold flavour, will not stain from coffee oils and will not soften near a heat source. For anything that holds hot liquid for hours - the thermal carafe on a drip coffee maker above all - the material is doing work that the finish gets the credit for.
