Bean-to-cup machines with a removable brew group

Inside every bean-to-cup machine is a brew group: the piston and chamber that takes the ground coffee, compresses it, pushes water through and ejects the puck. It handles wet coffee grounds several times a day. On some machines it slides out in one piece and goes under a tap. On others it is sealed inside and only ever gets an automated rinse cycle.

Coffee oils and fine grounds build up on the brew group whatever the machine does automatically, because rinsing with water does not remove oil. On a removable unit you take it out weekly, rinse it, let it dry, and occasionally use a cleaning tablet. On a sealed one you rely entirely on the automatic cycle and, eventually, on a technician opening the machine. That is the difference between a maintenance habit and a service cost, and it is why this is the one question worth asking before the milk system or the number of drink presets.

Sealed is not automatically bad

Some sealed designs are genuinely well engineered and several commercial machines work this way. What matters is whether the maker publishes a service interval and what it costs, and whether there is anywhere near you that does it. A sealed machine with a clear service plan is a known cost; a sealed machine with nothing published is an unknown one.

What to check on a removable one

How hard it is to get out matters, because a brew group that needs the machine moved and a manual consulted is one you will stop removing after a month. Look for a single latch, a handle, and a unit light enough to hold under a tap one-handed. Check whether the seals are replaceable and sold separately.
