Best White Coffee Makers

Brewers in white, cream and off-white, ranked from our reviews. White is the hardest finish to keep looking new and the easiest to plan a kitchen around: it reads as appliance rather than gadget, and it sits with the kettle and the toaster instead of competing with them. Coffee stains show on it, which is the honest trade, and a machine that lives under a cupboard will pick up a shadow along its top edge that a black one never shows. Makers file it under Cream, Ivory, Frost and Off-White as well as plain White.

Ranked by our review score, which is worked out from the specifications each maker publishes rather than from opinion, so you can open the arithmetic on any product page. Anything commercial is labelled and sits outside that order, and how we score explains what each criterion measures.

White is the hardest finish to keep looking new and the easiest to match to a kitchen. Both facts follow from the same property: nothing hides on it. Fewer than a quarter of the machines here offer it, so the shortlist is genuinely a shortlist rather than the whole catalogue in a different shade.

White plastic yellows, and heat makes it faster

This is the single thing worth knowing before buying. ABS and polypropylene both yellow under ultraviolet light, and a machine that also runs warm ages from the inside out as well. A white drip maker on a windowsill will shift colour within a couple of years, most visibly around the boiler housing and the warming plate. Painted metal and enamel do not do this. If the body is metal the white will still be white long after the machine stops working.

Cream is not white, and listings use both words

A large share of what is sold as white is cream, ivory, bone or off-white, and alongside a genuinely white kettle the difference is obvious and annoying. The photographs on this site are filed by the colourway the maker printed on the box, so where a machine is cream it is described as cream. If you are matching to existing appliances, match to a photograph rather than to the word.

What it is good at

White reflects heat rather than absorbing it, stays cooler in a sunlit kitchen, and makes a small counter read as larger. It also shows limescale drips and coffee splashes immediately, which is a nuisance and, if you are honest, the reason a white machine tends to get cleaned.

Common questions

Do white coffee makers stain?

Yes, and this is the honest trade. Coffee marks show on white the way they show nowhere else, and a machine that lives under a wall cupboard picks up a shadow along its top edge that a black one never shows. Against that, white reads as appliance rather than gadget, so it sits with the kettle and the toaster instead of competing with them.

Is cream the same as white?

No, and we keep them apart here on purpose. Cream, ivory and off-white are warm, and beside a white kettle they read as slightly dirty rather than slightly different. Every machine on this page is photographed in true white; a cream one is a different decision and belongs beside your other warm finishes, not your cool ones.

Does white cost more?

Not usually on the machines here. White tends to be a core colourway rather than a limited run, which is the opposite of red and pink, so it is normally the same price as black and stays available longer.

How do I stop a white coffee maker from yellowing?

Keep it out of direct sunlight, which is the single biggest factor, and wipe the housing rather than letting coffee oils sit on it - oils darken with heat. Nothing prevents it entirely on plastic, because the yellowing is the polymer itself changing rather than dirt on top of it. A metal or enamelled body avoids the problem altogether.

Can yellowed white plastic be made white again?

Sometimes, and only cosmetically. Hydrogen peroxide cream left on the plastic in daylight reverses a lot of the discolouration, which is a well-known trick from restoring old computers. It is fiddly, it works unevenly on textured surfaces, and it does not last - the plastic carries on ageing from where it left off.
