About medium roast coffee

Medium is the middle of the roast scale and by a long way the most crowded part of it. Sweetness and body have arrived, the sharper acids have broken down, and no single characteristic dominates. That is what makes it the most forgiving roast across every brewer, and it is why a roaster who does not know how you will make the coffee will put it here.

Why medium roast is the default roast

A medium roast is the safest commercial decision available. It survives a drip machine, a French press, a moka pot and a pod, it does not taste sour to somebody brewing carelessly and it does not taste burnt to somebody brewing well. Read a medium roast label as an absence of a strong opinion rather than as a statement about the bean, and read the rest of the bag for what the roaster actually did.

Why flavored coffee is usually a medium roast

Vanilla, hazelnut, pumpkin spice and caramel flavourings are applied to roasted beans, and they need a base that is sweet enough to carry them and neutral enough not to argue. A light roast's acidity fights an added flavour and a dark-roasted coffee's bitterness swallows it. If a coffee on this page is described by a dessert rather than by a country, it is almost certainly flavoured, and the bag should say so plainly.

Why most decaf is a medium roast

Decaffeination puts green beans through water, solvent or carbon dioxide before they are ever roasted, and the process costs them some structure and some aromatics. A medium roast is where most of what survives is still audible: light enough to keep some sweetness, dark enough to cover the flatness the process leaves behind. The decaf coffees we have reviewed are collected separately, and the good ones are worth the search.

What medium roast tastes like

The dominant register is chocolate, caramel and nutty, with enough sweetness that people describe these coffees as smooth. Brazilian beans are heavily represented in medium roast blends for exactly that reason: low acidity, heavy body, and a nuttiness that behaves in milk. Fruit is present occasionally and softly, more often as stone fruit than as the sharp berry character a lighter roast carries.

Medium roast works in any brewer

This is the band that does not punish equipment. It works in a French press pot, a drip machine, a pour over brewer and an espresso basket without needing different water temperatures or a different grinder setting to be drinkable. If you are buying one bag for a household that brews three different ways, buy a medium. That flexibility is the actual product.

Who a medium roast is for

Households, offices and anyone buying for someone else. It is also the correct answer for a first bag of whole bean coffee: it will not expose a new grinder, a kettle without temperature control or an inexact recipe, so the coffee tastes good while you work the rest of it out.

Who should not buy medium roast

Somebody chasing a specific taste. The breadth that makes this band useful is the same breadth that makes it vague, and a medium roast rarely tastes strongly of anything in particular. If you already know you want fruit and florals, go one step lighter. If you already know you want bittersweet and heavy, go one step darker. The middle is where you go when you do not want to choose.

Frequently asked questions about medium roast coffee

Is medium roast the best roast for beginners?

For a first bag of whole bean coffee, yes. It is the most forgiving band across brewers, so a new grinder, a kettle without temperature control or an approximate recipe will not make it taste bad. That lets you improve the rest of your setup without the coffee being the variable.

Does medium roast have more caffeine than dark roast?

Slightly, and only if you measure by volume. Roasting drives off moisture and mass, so darker beans are less dense and a scoop of them holds fewer beans. Weigh the dose instead and the two are close enough that the difference will not reach you.

Why is most flavoured coffee a medium roast?

Added flavourings need a base that is sweet enough to carry them and neutral enough not to fight them. A light roast's acidity argues with the flavouring and a dark roast's bitterness buries it. Medium is the only band that reliably does neither.

Is medium roast good for espresso?

It is the standard starting point, and most machines' defaults are built around it. It pulls a balanced shot without the fine grind and high temperature a light roast demands, and without the bitterness a dark roast can bring. Espresso blends that lean darker do so for body in milk.

What does medium roast taste like?

Chocolate, caramel and nuts, with a rounded sweetness and moderate body. Acidity is present but soft, and fruit shows as stone fruit rather than as sharp berry. Most people describe it as smooth, which is a fair word for a coffee where nothing is trying to dominate.
