The geometry of the cone is the brewer. Ribs let air escape so the paper does not seal against the wall, and the material decides how much heat the dripper steals from the water before it reaches the coffee.

Flow Rate and Control is how much the brewer decides and how much you do. A cone with one large exit drains as fast as the bed allows, so your pouring sets the contact time. A basket with several small holes meters the flow itself, which takes some control away and makes it harder to get badly wrong.

This is the number most buyers never work out before they pay. A $20 dripper that takes ordinary size-02 papers costs almost nothing to run. A $50 one that takes a proprietary filter costs more every month, forever.

How forgiving a dripper is of an uneven pour is real, and weighted at 14 out of 100: a flat bed forgives, a single-hole cone does not. But it is a matter of use rather than a published number.

Worked out rather than judged: the points a dripper earns on everything else, set against its price and the median for the category. Read it beside the filter section, because a cheap cone on expensive papers stops being cheap within a year.

The grinder, then the kettle, then the dripper, roughly in that order. A cone cannot fix an uneven grind, and pouring from a wide-spouted kettle onto a bed you cannot wet evenly will beat any advantage the dripper had.
