Mild coffee pods, intensity 5 and under

Intensity is the number printed on most capsule boxes, and it is the closest thing pods have to a roast level. Mild capsules sit at 5 and under on their maker's scale. They are lighter roasted, lighter in body and brighter in taste than the rest of a range, and they are the capsules most often mistaken for weak.

What the number actually measures

Nespresso describes intensity as a combination of roast depth, body and bitterness, a tasting judgement rather than a laboratory measurement. A higher number means a darker roast, a heavier mouthfeel and more bitterness. It is a flavour description on a scale, and nothing on the box turns it into a caffeine figure or a dose of coffee.

Mild is not weak

A low-intensity capsule usually holds much the same amount of coffee as a strong one from the same line. What changes is the roast. Taken off the heat earlier, the coffee keeps more acidity and more of the character of where it was grown, which reads in the cup as fruity, cereal or floral rather than bitter. It is the same trade as a light roast bag of beans, compressed into a capsule.

Caffeine does not follow the scale

Caffeine depends mainly on how much coffee a capsule holds and how much of it is robusta, which carries roughly twice the caffeine of arabica. Mild capsules tend to be mostly arabica, so they are rarely the most caffeinated in a range, but a large mild capsule can easily deliver more caffeine than a small strong one simply because it contains more coffee. How to drink them

Mild capsules are at their best black, at the size they were designed for. Pulled long they stay balanced where a strong capsule turns harsh. Under a lot of milk they disappear, and a latte made on one tastes mostly of milk.
