How to choose a moka pot
A moka pot is a pressure vessel you put on a hob. Steam pressure in the bottom chamber pushes water up through a basket of coffee and into the top. There is no pump, no thermostat and no timer, which makes it the cheapest way to get something espresso-adjacent and also the one where the hardware matters most.
Your hob decides most of this
Heat Source Compatibility is only 12 points of the score, but it is the first filter you should apply, because it is binary. Aluminium is not ferrous, so a traditional aluminium pot will not work on an induction hob at all. Steel pots will. If your kitchen is induction, that removes roughly half the category before you have compared anything else, and no adapter plate makes an aluminium pot behave well on one.
Gas and electric coils take either. On gas, keep the flame inside the base: scorching the handle is how most pots die.
Aluminium or steel, and what it really changes
Build Quality and Materials carries 20 points, and the split is not about durability alone. Aluminium conducts faster and heats more evenly on a small burner, which is why the classic pots are aluminium and why many people insist they taste better. It also reacts, cannot go in a dishwasher, and is usually sold with the instruction not to scrub the interior.
Stainless steel is heavier, slower to heat, dishwasher safe on many models, and neutral in the cup. It is also what makes induction possible. For most buyers replacing a pot rather than starting a tradition, steel is the easier object to live with.
The valve is the part nobody reads about
Safety and Valve Quality is 14 points. The pressure relief valve is what stands between a blocked basket and a burst seal, and it is the single component worth inspecting when a pot arrives and keeping clear at every wash. A pot whose valve is stiff, painted over or obstructed is not a bargain at any price.
What to ignore
Cup ratings. A moka "cup" is about 50 ml of concentrated coffee, not a mug, so a 6 cup pot makes roughly 300 ml. We list millilitres on every product page.
Also ignore the instruction to fill the basket and tamp it. A moka basket is levelled, not tamped: packing it raises the pressure the valve has to handle and pushes the brew bitter.

Do moka pots work on induction hobs?
Steel ones do and aluminium ones do not, because aluminium is not ferrous and an induction hob has nothing to grip. That single fact removes about half the category if your kitchen is induction, including the classic Bialetti Moka Express. Adapter plates exist but they heat unevenly and slowly, which is the opposite of what a moka pot wants.
Is an aluminium or stainless steel moka pot better?
Aluminium conducts faster and more evenly on a small burner, which is why the classic pots are made of it. Steel is neutral in the cup, often dishwasher safe, heavier, and the only option on induction. Aluminium reacts and should never go in a dishwasher. For a first pot on gas, aluminium is traditional; for anything else, steel is easier to live with.
How many cups does a moka pot actually make?
A moka cup is roughly 50 ml of concentrated coffee, not a mug. A 6 cup pot makes about 300 ml, which is two small servings or one large milk drink. Read the millilitre figure, which we list on every product page, because the cup rating is the least useful number on the box.
Why does my moka pot coffee taste bitter?
Usually heat or tamping. A moka basket is levelled, never tamped: packing it raises the pressure and pushes the brew bitter. Beyond that, take the pot off the heat when it starts to gurgle rather than letting it run dry, and use a medium grind rather than an espresso grind, which chokes the basket.
Is the safety valve on a moka pot important?
It is the most important part and the one nobody reads about. The valve limits pressure in the bottom chamber if the basket or spout clogs, so it is what stands between a blockage and a burst seal.
