Red is a decision. Nobody buys a red coffee maker by accident, and around thirty machines here offer one, which is more than most people expect and fewer than the category as a whole.
Almost always enamel or gloss over metal
Red is difficult to achieve in plastic without looking cheap, so it tends to appear on the machines that can carry a painted metal body - stand mixers, retro-styled drip makers, enamelled kettles and stovetop pots. That is good news for durability. A baked enamel finish is tougher than any plastic and will outlast the mechanism underneath it.
It fades in direct sun, and it chips
Red pigment is the least lightfast of the common appliance colours. A red machine on a south-facing counter will shift toward orange over years rather than months, but it will shift. Enamel also chips rather than scuffs: a knock that would mark a black machine takes a flake out of a red one, and the metal underneath shows through white or grey.
Match the red before you buy
There is no standard red. Post-box, burgundy, cherry, matte oxblood and the bright orange-reds sold as red all live in this family, and two of them side by side look like a mistake. This is the colour where judging from a photograph matters most, because the word tells you almost nothing.

Are red coffee makers a limited run?
Often, and it is worth knowing before you plan a kitchen around one. Red is the finish most likely to be a seasonal or limited colourway, so a model you find in it this year may only exist in black next year, and a replacement part in the same shade may not exist at all.
Which red is which?
The makers here call it Cerise, Flame, Tomato, Candy Apple, Rescue Red and plain Red, and they are not interchangeable. Cerise and Candy Apple are blue-reds that sit against pink and purple; Flame and Tomato are orange-reds that sit against wood and brass. Where a listing names its own shade we keep that name, because what arrives should match what you were shown.
Does red fade?
A powder-coated steel body holds its colour about as well as any other colour does. Red pigment is the one most affected by strong direct sun over years, so a machine on a windowsill is the case to think about, not a machine on a counter.
Why are so many red coffee makers retro styled?
Because red suits the shapes that carry it. The finish works best on painted metal, and painted metal bodies with rounded corners and chrome trim belong to a design language that reads as mid-century. Modern machines lean on plastic and brushed steel, where a strong red is harder to make look expensive, so makers tend not to try.
Will a red coffee maker date quickly?
The colour will outlast the styling. Red itself is not especially tied to a decade, but the retro shape most red machines come in is, and that is what starts to look old. A plainly shaped red kettle stays current far longer than a red machine with chrome fins, which is worth weighing if you keep appliances for a decade.
