Coffee Bags

A coffee bag is ground coffee sealed in a filter sachet that you steep in hot water like a tea bag. It is not instant, because nothing has been dissolved and redried, and it is not a pod, because it needs no machine. It sits in between, and it is the least understood format in coffee.

What it is actually doing

Because the grounds are real coffee held in a filter, brewing one is immersion: the coffee steeps, the filter keeps the grounds out of the cup, and you lift the bag out when the strength is right.

That means it tastes like brewed coffee rather than like instant, which has been through a drying process that removes aroma along with water. Against a freshly ground pour over it is clearly the lesser cup, mostly because the coffee inside was ground weeks or months before you opened it.

Where it genuinely wins

Judge it against the realistic alternative. In a hotel room, an office kitchen, a tent or a hospital ward, the alternative is instant or nothing, and a coffee bag is better than both.

It needs no machine, no grinder, no filter papers and no scale. It produces one cup with no equipment to wash and nothing to dispose of but the bag. For travel that combination is hard to beat, and it is why the format exists.

Where it does not win is at home with a kitchen. Anything on this site will beat it, including the cheapest dripper.

How to brew one properly

Most people under-brew them. Use water just off the boil, and give it three to four minutes rather than the thirty seconds a tea bag suggests. Coffee grounds need longer than tea leaves to give up what they have.

Agitate it gently, a few dunks or a stir, because a bag sitting still brews only the grounds at its edges. And take it out when the time is up rather than leaving it in the cup, since a bag left in keeps extracting and turns bitter.

Why the selection is thin

This category is small and it is the market rather than an omission. Searching Amazon US for coffee bags returns mostly empty packaging for people to fill themselves, along with pods and instant sachets, which are different products entirely. The format is far more common in the UK and Japan than in the US.

If nothing here suits, the closest alternatives are specialty instant, which is lighter to carry and now much better than it used to be, or a portable dripper with pre ground coffee, which is a better cup and more to carry.
