About coffee gear under $200

Read this band as what it adds to under $100. The answer is a grinder with a motor in it that is genuinely worth having, and that matters because grind consistency does more to the cup than any other piece of equipment you can buy.

Why a grinder under $200 matters more than anything else

Water extracts from the surface of coffee particles. If the grind is a mix of boulders and dust, the dust over-extracts into bitterness while the boulders under-extract into sourness, and you taste both in the same mouthful. No brewer, kettle or recipe fixes that, because the problem arrives before the water does. Burr grinders against blade grinders is the underlying argument.

What separates a good electric grinder from a cheap one

Burr size, because larger burrs cut more per rotation and generate less heat. Shaft stability, because play between the burrs is grind inconsistency by another name. And whether the adjustment holds: a grinder that drifts between sessions cannot be dialled in, and dialling in is the entire point of owning one. Retention matters too, and it is the figure most makers leave off the box.

Drip coffee makers under $200

This is the ceiling where an automatic drip coffee maker that actually reaches and holds brewing temperature becomes available, including certified ones. SCA certified coffee makers are the ones tested against a written standard rather than a marketing claim, and they solve the commonest fault of cheaper machines.

What you still cannot get under $200

Espresso that is worth the trouble, and any grinder that can do espresso well. Espresso needs a much finer grind and much smaller adjustment steps than filter, and grinders that manage both start higher. Under $500 is where that changes.

A sensible coffee setup under $200

Electric burr grinder, variable temperature kettle, a good manual brewer, a scale. That is a filter setup nothing in a cafe will embarrass, and the remaining variable is the coffee.
