Best Travel and Camping Coffee Makers

Brewers for a rucksack, a hotel room or a campsite, ranked from our reviews. Unbreakable beats everything else here, which rules out glass however good the coffee is - a borosilicate carafe is the wrong object to put in a bag. After that it is whether the thing packs inside itself, whether it needs power (mostly it must not), and how many separate parts there are to lose. Sealed formats sidestep the whole question: a coffee bag or an instant sachet needs hot water and nothing else at all.

Ranked by our review score, which is worked out from the specifications each maker publishes rather than from opinion, so you can open the arithmetic on any product page. Anything commercial is labelled and sits outside that order, and how we score explains what each criterion measures.

A travel brewer has to survive being carried, work without a socket, and pack into a space it does not own. Everything else about it is secondary, which makes this one of the few categories where the shortlist is decided by physics rather than by taste.

Unbreakable comes first, which rules out glass

A borosilicate carafe makes excellent coffee and is the wrong object to put in a rucksack. So is a ceramic dripper. This list excludes both on material regardless of how they score elsewhere, which removes some genuinely good brewers - the glass AeroPress Premium and the Hario Switch cones among them. They are better coffee makers than several things on this page and they are not travel coffee makers.

What is left is steel, aluminium, copper and plastic. A moka pot is aluminium or steel and survives a pannier. A cezve is copper or steel and survives anything. An AeroPress is polypropylene and has been dropped by more people than any other brewer here.

No socket, or it is a different kind of travel

Hotel-room travel and off-grid camping are two different problems, and this list is the second one. Anything with a wattage, a voltage or a heated base is excluded even when it is small and portable, because a campsite has no plug and a brewer that needs one is a kitchen appliance in a travel-shaped body.

That distinction removes some genuinely portable machines. If your travelling always ends in a room with a socket, they are worth looking at - but they belong on a different list from a camping stove.

Capacity is the honest proxy for packability

Nothing over half a litre is here. It is a blunt rule and it works: nobody carries a 20oz carafe up a hill, and capacity is a figure almost every maker publishes where "packs down small" is a phrase anyone can print. It is also what catches the awkward cases - the AeroPress XL brews the same coffee as the Original and is 193mm tall with a separate carafe, and our own review of it says it is the one that stays home.

What to ignore

Included travel cases. They are the cheapest thing a manufacturer can add and they inflate a portability score without changing whether the brewer packs. A stainless cezve with no case travels better than a fragile brewer with a padded bag.

Common questions

What is the best coffee maker for camping?

Something unbreakable that needs no power: a stainless or aluminium moka pot, a copper or steel cezve, or a plastic immersion brewer like an AeroPress. All three work on a camp stove or a fire and survive being packed.

Why are glass coffee makers excluded from this list?

Because unbreakable beats everything else in a bag. A borosilicate carafe or a ceramic dripper can make better coffee than several items here and still be the wrong object to travel with, so this list excludes them on material rather than on score.

Can I take an electric coffee maker camping?

Not without a power source, which is why anything with a wattage, a voltage or a heated base is excluded here. Small electric brewers are genuinely portable for hotel-room travel; they are a different category from a campsite brewer.

Does a travel case make a coffee maker more portable?

Barely. A case is the cheapest thing a manufacturer can include and it does not change whether the brewer itself packs down or survives being dropped. Judge the object, not the bag it comes in.

Is an AeroPress good for travel?

The Original and the Go are, being plastic and compact. The XL is not - it is 193mm tall with a separate 20oz carafe, and our own review calls it the one that stays home.
