SCA certified coffee makers

Most claims on a coffee machine box are the maker's own. This one is not. To carry SCA certification a brewer is submitted and tested against a written standard covering brewing temperature, contact time, the evenness of the water over the bed and the strength and extraction of the resulting cup. It either passes or it does not.

What the standard is actually checking

Chiefly that the machine gets the water hot enough and keeps it there. A great many cheap drip machines never reach proper brewing temperature at all, which is why their coffee tastes thin however good the beans are. The standard also looks at how the water is distributed: a single stream drilled into the middle of the bed extracts the centre and leaves the edges, and a shower head does not.

Why so few machines have it

Testing costs money and the certification has to be maintained, so it tends to appear on machines whose makers are already competing on brewing quality rather than on price or features. Plenty of good machines are not certified. The absence of the badge is not evidence of a bad brewer; the presence of it is evidence of a tested one, which is a much rarer thing.

It says nothing about the coffee

A certified machine brewing stale supermarket pre-ground makes an excellently-brewed cup of stale coffee. The standard governs the water and the timing, not what you put in. If you are buying one of these, the money is only worth it alongside beans with a printed roast date and a grinder that produces an even grind. Burr against blade is the relevant half of that.

Who it suits

Somebody who wants filter coffee by the jug, made properly, without standing over a kettle. It is the automatic answer to the same question pour over brewing answers manually, and it is the right buy for a household that drinks several cups each morning.
