Pod machines that take refillable capsules

A reusable capsule is an empty shell with a mesh or perforated base that you fill with ground coffee, tamp lightly, and use like a normal pod. It exists because the machine is cheap and the capsules are not, and over a machine's life the capsules are nearly all of what you spend.

The economics are the reason people do it

The pod is the business model. Factory capsules are sold at a price per kilo that is many times the price of the same coffee in a bag, and the machine is priced to get you into the system. Filling your own means buying coffee by the bag at bag prices. What a coffee pod actually costs per cup puts real numbers on the gap.

What you give up

Factory pods are sealed under nitrogen or vacuum and pressurised in ways a refillable shell cannot match, so a home-filled capsule is fresher in one sense and less consistent in another. Getting a good result takes a finer grind than you would expect, a consistent dose and a light tamp, and the first several attempts will be watery or slow. It is a small skill rather than a plug-in replacement.

Grind is the whole game

Too coarse and water rushes through and you get hot brown water; too fine and the machine strains or bypasses. You need a grinder that adjusts finely and repeats, which for many people is a purchase in itself and eats into the saving. Burr versus blade grinding is the relevant distinction: a blade grinder cannot do this at all.

Check the machine, not just the capsule

Some machines read a barcode or a rim on the capsule and refuse anything they do not recognise, and that behaviour changes between generations of the same brand. This list is the machines whose makers state a reusable option works. Whether a given third-party shell fits a given model is a narrower question, and the seller of the shell is the one who should be answering it.
