Find the best milk frothers for lattes, cappuccinos and iced drinks: electric jugs that heat and whisk milk in one step, with no steam wand needed. How to choose a milk frother

An electric milk frother is a small jug on a powered base. You pour in cold milk, press a button, and a whisk in the bottom spins while the base heats, so a minute or two later you have hot milk or foam for a latte or a cappuccino, with no steam wand and no skill involved. Most also make cold foam for iced drinks. They differ far less in the foam than the marketing suggests and far more in three practical things: what they can make, how much milk they take, and how hard the jug is to clean afterwards. That is how they are scored here.

5 of the 5 criteria are explained below; the rest link to how they are scored.

Before you buy

Jug frother, handheld whisk or steam wand?

A jug frother heats and froths together, stops by itself, and gives the same result every morning. A handheld whisk is a battery stick you hold in a mug of milk you have already heated; it costs far less and froths, but it does not heat, so the temperature is up to you. A steam wand on an espresso machine is the only one that makes the fine, glossy microfoam baristas pour latte art with, and it takes practice. If you want a latte without thinking about it, a jug is the answer. Handheld frothers, milk pitchers and thermometers are in our coffee accessories.

30/ 100Frothing & Modes

Frothing and modes is 30 points: what it can make

Modes

Count the programs: hot milk, one or two kinds of hot foam (airy for a cappuccino, denser for a latte or flat white), cold foam, and sometimes a stir setting for hot chocolate. Three is the minimum that covers the usual drinks; five or more adds foam types for people who switch between drinks.

Cold foam

Frothing milk without heating it is what makes an iced latte or a cold foam topping, and most current jugs do it. We give it real weight because it is the one mode that a pan of milk and a whisk cannot easily copy.

A temperature choice

Most jugs heat to one fixed temperature per mode. A few let you choose, which matters if you like a cooler cup for a child, or hotter milk for a drink you carry out of the house.

Both are published and shown on each review, but no maker ties either to better foam.

25/ 100Cleaning & Handling

Cleaning and handling is 25 points, because milk burns on

A dishwasher-safe jug

Milk protein bakes onto a heated jug every single time, and the ones that end up in a cupboard are the ones that are tedious to wash. Many makers allow only the lid and whisk in the dishwasher and say the jug is hand wash only, so read the cleaning table before you buy.

A non-stick jug

A coated interior wipes clean in seconds; bare steel needs a soak if you leave it.

A jug that lifts off and switches itself off

A jug that comes away from its base pours like a pitcher and goes to the sink without the cable. Automatic shut-off ends each cycle on its own, which is the point of the machine.

Read our guide to the latte for how much milk and foam goes into one, and the cappuccino for the drier, foamier version.

20/ 100Capacity

Capacity is 20 points: how many drinks one jug makes

Milk for foam120 ml

Every jug has two MAX lines. The foam line is the lower one, because milk roughly doubles as it froths: around 120 ml makes foam for one or two drinks, while the largest jugs take several times that and serve a table.

Milk for heating

The higher line is for hot milk without foam, and it is the figure that decides whether you can make hot chocolate for a family in one go.

A jug that is too big is not a fault, but most have a minimum line too, and below it the whisk cannot pull air into the milk. If you only ever make one small drink, a smaller jug wastes less.

15/ 100Materials & Warranty

Materials and warranty is 15 points

The jug

Stainless steel outlasts a plastic body and does not stain; plastic keeps the price and the weight down. Warranty and spare parts. The whisk is the part that wears or goes missing, so a maker that sells a replacement whisk and lid keeps the frother working for years. Most publish a one-year warranty; a longer one is rare and earns more.

10/ 100Value for Money

Value is 10 points against the category median

Price is scored against the middle of the frothers we rate. A frother costing twice as much needs to make more drinks, or be easier to clean, to earn it. Where a maker publishes no US price, the value score says so rather than guessing.

Before you buy

Which milk froths best in an electric frother?

Cold whole milk straight from the fridge makes the most stable foam, because its fat and protein hold the bubbles. Skimmed milk froths up high but collapses quickly. Plant milks vary: barista editions of oat, soy and almond are made to foam, while standard cartons often go thin. Never start with warm milk, and never froth milk that has already been heated, because the proteins that hold the foam have already set. For iced drinks, our iced latte guide covers the cold foam route.

Milk frother FAQs

Is an electric milk frother worth it?

If you make milk coffee at home most days without a steam wand, yes. A jug frother heats and froths in one step and stops on its own, so a latte or cappuccino takes a button press instead of a pan and a whisk. If you drink black coffee and want foam once a month, a handheld whisk does the job for far less.

Can a milk frother make cold foam?

Most current electric jug frothers have a cold foam mode that froths milk without heating it, for iced lattes and cold foam toppings. Check the mode list before you buy: older and cheaper models make hot milk and hot foam only.

Can you put a milk frother jug in the dishwasher?

It depends on the model. Some makers allow the whole jug in the dishwasher, others only the lid and the whisk, with the jug hand wash only. The power base never goes in water. The cleaning table in the manual says which parts are safe.

Is a milk frother as good as a steam wand?

For an everyday latte or cappuccino, a jug frother makes good, consistent foam with no skill involved. A steam wand makes finer, glossier microfoam that pours latte art, but it needs an espresso machine and practice. Most people who buy a jug frother are choosing convenience over latte art, and get it.

Can you make hot chocolate in a milk frother?

Some frothers have a hot chocolate or stir setting that mixes cocoa into hot milk. Others tell you not to add powder, syrup or sugar to the jug at all, because it can stick to the coating and stop the whisk. If hot chocolate matters, choose a frother with a dedicated setting, or add the cocoa to the cup and pour hot milk over it.

How much milk do you put in a milk frother?

Fill to the foam line for foam and to the higher line for hot milk, never above. Milk roughly doubles in volume as it froths, which is why the foam line is lower. Below the minimum line the whisk cannot pull in air, so very small amounts come out flat.
