About coffee blends

A blend is coffee from more than one place, combined so the result tastes the same next month as it does today. That consistency is the product. Coffee is agricultural and seasonal, so a roaster who wants a house espresso that does not move has to build it deliberately out of beans they can keep buying, and substitute components as harvests come and go without the cup changing.

Consistency is a skill, not a compromise

The word blend has an apologetic ring to it that it does not deserve. Holding one flavour steady across a year of shifting harvests is harder than selling a good lot as it arrives, and it is what makes a café's espresso taste the same in January and in July. If you have ever had to re-dial a grinder because a new bag of single origin beans extracted differently, you have felt the thing a blend is engineered to remove.

Espresso is where it earns its keep

Espresso is unforgiving: a small change in the bean shows up as a large change in the shot, and a café pulling hundreds a day cannot re-dial every morning. Blends also let a roaster build something no single farm produces, most commonly a Brazilian base for body and nuttiness, something Central American for sweetness and a small proportion of African coffee for brightness. Almost every named house espresso works this way. Grinders for espresso is the other half of a repeatable shot.

Milk drinks want a blend too

Milk is sweet, fatty and very good at flattening subtlety, so a coffee that tastes balanced black can vanish entirely in a flat white. Blends built for milk lean on body and chocolate flavours rather than acidity, and they usually sit at medium-dark for the same reason. If most of your coffee has milk in it, a blend is not a downgrade, it is the correct tool.

What a blend can hide

The honest downside is that a blend has no obligation to tell you what is in it. Percentages, origins and processing are disclosed at the roaster's discretion, and the vaguer the label, the more freedom they have to change the recipe when a component gets expensive. The good roasters name the components and say why each is there. The rest give you a name and an adjective. That difference is the single most useful thing to look for on a blend bag, and it is the same test as on a single origin: does the label make a claim you could check?

Blends dominate every format except whole bean

Capsules, instant and coffee bags are almost entirely blends, and for the same reason cafés use them: those formats are manufactured to a fixed spec at scale, and a seasonal single lot cannot supply one. What a pod actually costs per cup is the more useful question in those categories than which origin is in it.

Who it is for

Anyone with an espresso machine, anyone drinking coffee with milk, anyone buying for an office or a household, and anyone who wants to stop thinking about it. Buying the same blend repeatedly is also how you actually learn to brew, because it holds one variable still while you change the others.

Who it is not for

Anyone trying to work out what they like. A blend is designed so no single component announces itself, which makes it a poor teacher. If you want to know whether you prefer Ethiopian to Colombian, a blend cannot tell you and a single origin can.

Is a blend worse than single origin coffee?
