About stainless steel coffee gear

Stainless steel is the safe answer in coffee gear and mostly deserves to be. It does not react with acid, it does not hold flavour between brews, it survives a dishwasher and a concrete floor, and it does not shatter. Where it loses is that you cannot see through it and it costs more than the alternatives.

Stainless steel coffee gear: body, burrs and carafe

This page gathers steel bodies, steel burrs and steel carafes together, which is right because somebody searching for steel coffee gear wants all three, but they are not the same claim. A steel BODY is about durability and cleaning. A steel CARAFE is about heat retention and not breaking. Steel BURRS are about grinding, and there the comparison is with ceramic rather than with glass.

Where stainless steel coffee gear is the better choice

Anything that gets carried, dropped or taken outdoors. French presses are the obvious case: the glass beaker is the part that breaks, and a steel one removes the failure mode entirely while adding heat retention. Same for cezves, which live on direct flame, and for kettles, where a steel interior avoids the question of what plastic is in the water path.

Downsides of stainless steel coffee gear

You lose sight of the brew, which matters more than people expect in an immersion brewer where the whole technique is watching. Steel is also a poorer conductor than aluminium, which is why the classic moka pot is not made of it: a steel moka pot heats less evenly and is easier to scorch. And a thin, cheap steel item is worse than a good glass one, because the material does not make the product.

Stainless steel grades: 18/8, 18/10, 304 and 316

18/8 and 18/10 describe chromium and nickel content and both are food-grade; 304 is the same family under a different naming system. 316 adds molybdenum and resists salt better, which matters at sea and not in a kitchen. Any of them is fine for coffee, and a maker who states the grade at all is telling you something about how much else they will state.

What stainless steel does not fix

Coffee oil. Steel does not absorb flavour, but oil still films on it and goes rancid, and a dishwasher does not remove oil. A steel French press filter needs a brush and an occasional soak in a proper cleaner exactly as a glass one does. Dishwasher safe gear covers what the machine does and does not do.

Frequently asked questions about stainless steel coffee gear

Is stainless steel better than glass for coffee?

For durability, heat retention and portability, yes. For seeing what you are brewing, no, and that matters in an immersion brewer where watching is the technique. Glass is also neutral in exactly the same way steel is, so it is not a flavour question.

Does stainless steel make coffee taste metallic?

Good food-grade steel does not react with coffee and adds no flavour. A metallic taste is usually rancid coffee oil filmed on the surface, or a very cheap alloy. The fix is cleaning rather than replacing.

What grade of stainless steel should coffee gear be?

18/8, 18/10 and 304 are the same food-grade family and any is fine. 316 resists salt corrosion, which is a marine concern rather than a kitchen one. A maker who publishes the grade is usually publishing other things too.
