Best Coffee Makers for an Office
Brewers that make ten cups or more, ranked from our reviews. The specification that matters most at work is not capacity but what happens to the coffee after it is brewed. A glass carafe sits on a hotplate and keeps cooking, so by the fourth cup it tastes burnt and nobody can say why; a thermal carafe holds it for hours without a heat source. The second thing is that nobody descales a machine at work, ever, so a cleaning reminder and dishwasher-safe parts do more here than they do at home.
Ranked by our review score, which is worked out from the specifications each maker publishes rather than from opinion, so you can open the arithmetic on any product page. Anything commercial is labelled and sits outside that order, and how we score explains what each criterion measures.

An office machine is judged on different things from a home one. It will be used by people who did not choose it, cleaned by nobody in particular, and asked to produce coffee in bursts rather than steadily. Capacity and resilience beat refinement.
Capacity is about queueing, not volume
The figure that matters is not how much a machine holds but how many people are waiting. A brewer producing one cup a minute is fine for four people and a bottleneck for twenty, and a large reservoir simply means somebody refills it less often rather than the machine being faster.
For a shared kitchen, a large tank plus a fast cycle is the combination worth paying for. Either one alone leaves a queue.
The running cost is the real decision
Multiply honestly. Twenty people at two cups a day is 40 cups: on capsules at $0.64 that is around $6,600 a year, and at $1.20 it is over $12,000. A bean-to-cup or a drip machine with ground coffee changes that figure by an order of magnitude, and the machine's own price stops mattering almost immediately at that scale.
Capsules still win on one axis: nobody has to clean anything, and in an office that is worth more than it sounds.
Maintenance is the thing that kills office machines
A machine whose brew group comes out to be rinsed will outlive one that cannot be opened, because in a shared kitchen the descaling nobody owns simply does not happen. Look for a descale indicator, a removable brew unit and a dishwasher-safe carafe, and assume nothing optional will ever be done.
What to ignore
Programmable timers in an office. They assume somebody sets them and somebody else drinks the result at the right moment, and in practice the coffee sits on a hotplate stewing until someone notices. Brew on demand.
Common questions
What size coffee maker does an office need?
Judge it by queueing rather than volume. One cup a minute suits four people and bottlenecks at twenty. A large tank only means fewer refills, so for a shared kitchen you want a large reservoir and a fast cycle together.
Are capsule machines too expensive for an office?
At scale, yes on coffee and no on labour. Twenty people at two cups a day is around $6,600 a year at $0.64 a capsule and over $12,000 at $1.20. Ground coffee costs a fraction of that, but somebody has to clean the machine.
What breaks first on an office coffee machine?
Whatever needed cleaning that nobody owned. A removable brew group and a descale indicator matter more in a shared kitchen than any feature on the front panel, because optional maintenance does not happen.
Should an office machine have a timer?
Usually not. A timer assumes somebody sets it and somebody drinks the result promptly; in practice the pot stews on a hotplate until noticed. Brewing on demand wastes less and tastes better.
Is a bean-to-cup machine worth it for an office?
On running cost, comfortably - ground or whole beans cost a fraction of capsules at office volumes. The trade is that it needs real maintenance, so it works where somebody is accountable for it and fails where nobody is.
