Black is the default finish in this category, and defaults are worth understanding rather than accepting. Roughly a third of everything reviewed here is available in black, which means choosing it costs you nothing in range - the opposite of every other colour on this site.

It hides marks, and it hides the machine's own signals

Splashes, the tidemark inside a carafe and the fine spray around a grinder all disappear against black. That is the practical case for it and it is a real one. The cost is that a machine communicates by being visible: the water level behind a window, how full the bean hopper is, whether the drip tray has filled up. On a black body with a black tray, each of those becomes something you check by hand rather than notice in passing.

Matte and gloss age differently

Gloss black takes fingerprints immediately and wipes clean in one pass. Matte black shows dust and grease rather than prints, and grease is the harder of the two to remove without leaving a patch. Neither is better; they fail in different places, and a machine that lives beside a hob will collect more of what matte shows.

Where black goes wrong is plastic

Powder-coated steel and anodised aluminium hold their colour effectively forever. Black ABS plastic does not: it greys and chalks with heat and sunlight, and a cheap black drip machine parked on a sunny counter can look a decade old in two years. The finish is worth more attention than the colour name on a listing, because the two are unrelated.
