Best Black Coffee Makers

Brewers that come in black, ranked from our reviews. It is the default finish for a reason: it hides the stains that a glass carafe and a steel body both show within a month, and it disappears against most kitchens rather than announcing itself. Makers call it Matte Black, Obsidian, Onyx and Black Truffle, and they are all the same decision. What you give up is the ability to see anything: on a black machine the water line, the bean level and the drip tray are all harder to read than on steel, which matters more than people expect at six in the morning.

Black is the default finish in this category, and defaults are worth understanding rather than accepting. Roughly a third of everything reviewed here is available in black, which means choosing it costs you nothing in range - the opposite of every other colour on this site.

It hides marks, and it hides the machine's own signals

Splashes, the tidemark inside a carafe and the fine spray around a grinder all disappear against black. That is the practical case for it and it is a real one. The cost is that a machine communicates by being visible: the water level behind a window, how full the bean hopper is, whether the drip tray has filled up. On a black body with a black tray, each of those becomes something you check by hand rather than notice in passing.

Matte and gloss age differently

Gloss black takes fingerprints immediately and wipes clean in one pass. Matte black shows dust and grease rather than prints, and grease is the harder of the two to remove without leaving a patch. Neither is better; they fail in different places, and a machine that lives beside a hob will collect more of what matte shows.

Where black goes wrong is plastic

Powder-coated steel and anodised aluminium hold their colour effectively forever. Black ABS plastic does not: it greys and chalks with heat and sunlight, and a cheap black drip machine parked on a sunny counter can look a decade old in two years. The finish is worth more attention than the colour name on a listing, because the two are unrelated.

Common questions

Do black coffee makers show coffee stains?

Less than anything else, which is most of why black is the default finish. Splashes and the tidemark inside a carafe both disappear against it, where they show within a month on white and steel. What black hides instead of dirt is information: the water line, the bean level and a full drip tray are all harder to read on a black machine, which matters more than people expect at six in the morning.

Is matte or gloss black better?

Gloss shows fingerprints and matte shows dust, so it is a question of which you would rather wipe. Matte also scuffs where a portafilter or a carafe knocks it, and the mark stays; gloss takes the same knock and buffs out.

Why do makers give black so many different names?

Because it sells better with one. The machines on this page are called Matte Black, Ebony Black, Soulages Black, Thunder Black, Black Truffle and simply Black, and they are all the same decision. Where a maker names its own shade we keep that name on the card, because it is what you will see at checkout.

What is the most popular colour for a coffee maker?

Black, by a wide margin, and it is not really a style decision. It is the cheapest finish to produce consistently, it photographs well against any kitchen, and it hides the marks a coffee machine inevitably makes. Does a black coffee maker hide limescale?

No - it is the one thing black makes worse. Limescale dries white, so on a black kettle element or a black drip tray it shows up as chalky pale streaks that would be nearly invisible on steel. If you live in a hard water area, expect to descale a black machine on the same schedule as any other and to see the evidence more clearly in between.
