Nespresso Vertuo Coffee Machine Review

The original Vertuo, with the biggest tank in the range and no frother to store

The original Nespresso Vertuo brews four cup sizes from Vertuo capsules with a 54oz water tank, a 17 capsule used-pod bin, a 25 second heat-up and automatic shut-off.

Spec-led review. Built from the manufacturer’s published specification and price rather than hands-on testing. Figures we could not find stated are left blank instead of estimated. Updated when we get one in.

The verdict

The original Nespresso Vertuo brews four cup sizes from Vertuo capsules with a 54oz water tank, a 17 capsule used-pod bin, a 25 second heat-up and automatic shut-off.

Pros

  • A 1.6 litre tank, published as extra-large 54oz, and a 17-capsule used bin, both the largest of any Vertuo here
  • Four sizes across coffee and espresso, and it brews over ice
  • 25-second warm-up with energy-saving auto shut-off

Cons

  • Vertuo is closed: no third-party and no reusable capsules
  • No frother is included with this model
  • No price and no warranty term published

What is the Nespresso Vertuo?

The machine that started the line, and it still has the largest tank and bin in it.

Nespresso publishes four cup sizes at the touch of a button, being 5oz and 8oz coffee plus single and double espresso, Centrifusion extraction, a 25 second heat-up, energy saving automatic shut-off, brewing over ice, an extra-large 54 ounce water tank, and a 17-count used pod container. It measures 8.97 by 12.22 by 12.33 inches.

Why tank and bin size decide how a pod machine feels

These are the two numbers nobody compares and the two you interact with most.

A capsule machine has exactly two chores: filling the water and emptying the used pods. Everything else is pressing a button. A small tank means refilling every few drinks; a small bin means the machine jams because nobody emptied it.

54oz and 17 capsules are the largest figures published anywhere in this range. The Vertuo Up publishes 47oz and no bin figure at all, and most of the others publish neither. For a household of two or three, that difference is felt every single day, and it is invisible on a comparison table because most makers do not fill the numbers in.

Four sizes rather than six, and whether that matters

It brews 5oz and 8oz coffee. The newer machines add 12oz and 18oz.

If you drink a large mug, the newer Up or Lattissima reach sizes this one cannot. That is a real limitation and the main reason to pay more.

If 8oz is your coffee, the extra sizes are marketing and this machine does the same job with a bigger tank, an emptier bin and a lower price. It is worth being honest about which of those two people you are before spending the difference.

Nespresso Vertuo vs Vertuo Plus Deluxe

Same four sizes, same system, and the split is bin size against the frother.

The Vertuo Plus Deluxe comes bundled with the Aeroccino3 milk frother and has a motorised head, and Nespresso publishes no tank or bin figure for it.

This one publishes both and has no frother. If you take milk, the Plus Deluxe bundle is the cheaper route to it than buying an Aeroccino separately. If you drink it black, this is the machine with the capacity and one less appliance on the counter.

Is the Nespresso Vertuo worth it?

Worth it as the practical Vertuo, and it is the one to buy if you drink it black.

It is the best documented machine in the range on the two specs that affect daily use, and the drinks are identical to the more expensive Vertuos at the sizes they share.

The lock-in is the same as every Vertuo and it is total: Nespresso capsules only, no third party, no refillable. Nespresso publishes no wattage, no pump pressure, no warranty term and no weight on this listing, and there is no milk system of any kind.

Who should buy it (and who should not)

Buy it for black coffee in a busy household.

It suits two or three people drinking 8oz coffees who are tired of refilling and emptying, and anybody who does not want a second appliance for milk.

Do not buy it if you want an 18oz mug, which needs the Up. Do not buy it for milk drinks. And do not buy into Vertuo at all if you expect to shop around for capsules, because you cannot.
