What is Ispirazione Roma?
The Rome entry in Nespresso's Italian range, and a light roast at a high intensity.
Nespresso's own framing is that Roman coffee bars balance popular taste against elegance, and the roast echoes it. In practice that means a capsule rated 8 that is only 3 of 5 for roast level.
$9.00 a sleeve of ten, 90 cents a capsule, and it pours as either a 25ml ristretto or a 40ml espresso.
Which machines does it fit?
Nespresso Original machines, and the many third-party machines built for Original capsules.
Original is the open half of Nespresso. The patents expired, so De'Longhi, Breville and others build machines that take these capsules, other roasters make compatible ones, and refillable pods exist. That competition is what puts a floor under what a cup costs for as long as you own the machine.
It will not fit a Vertuo. Those capsules are larger and carry a barcode the machine reads to set the pour, and the two systems share a brand and nothing else.
What is in the capsule
A lightly roasted blend rated 8, with acidity 4 of 5 and roast level 3.
Intensity 8 and roast level 3 looks like a contradiction and is not. Nespresso's intensity number is about body and strength of character, not about how dark the beans went, so a lighter roast can score high if it has enough going on.
The result is an espresso that keeps acidity where most capsules at this intensity have roasted it away. The published notes are woody and earthy with cereal, which is not the crowd-pleasing description Nespresso usually reaches for, and is more useful for it.
No origin is named for the blend. The dose is published in the Contents and Allergens panel: 50g for ten capsules, so 5.0g each and $180 a kilo.
What a cup costs
90 cents a pod, in sleeves of ten.
The same as every other Original espresso in this group. Nespresso does not price by intensity or by origin within the core range.
There is no larger box. Sleeves of ten are the only unit Nespresso sells Original coffee in, so 90 cents is the floor.
What happens to the capsule afterwards
Aluminium, returned through Nespresso's mail-back scheme rather than your kerbside bin.
Free collection bags from Nespresso, handed in at a UPS drop-off point or a boutique. It is funded and it works if you use it.
The distinction worth keeping is between a scheme you join and a bin already emptied at your door. Aluminium is endlessly recyclable in principle; this capsule is recycled only if you post it back.
Roma vs Capriccio
Two savoury, cereal-led capsules at the same price and very different intensities.
Roma is rated 8 with acidity 4 and roast level 3. Capriccio is rated 5 with acidity 3 and roastiness 2, and names South America as its origin where Roma names nothing.
They are aiming at similar territory, savoury rather than sweet, and Roma is the stronger and brighter of the two. If you want the same character at less strength, Capriccio is the cheaper cup only in the sense that they cost the same.
Is Ispirazione Roma worth it?
If you want an espresso with acidity still in it, yes, and few capsules offer that at this strength.
Most capsules solve the problem of tasting good under pressure by roasting dark, which is safe and makes everything taste broadly similar. This one does not, and publishes the numbers that show it.
The woody and earthy note is the risk. It is a real description rather than a marketing one, and not everybody wants it.
Who should buy it (and who should not)
Original owners who drink espresso black and find most capsules taste the same.
Buy it if the dark end of the range bores you and you want acidity in a short cup. Buy it if you drink ristretto, where the concentration suits the profile.
Do not buy it for milk drinks, because the qualities that make it interesting are the ones milk removes. Do not buy it if you need decaf, because this line has none.
