Keurig Alta: How AltaRounds Work and Whether It Takes K-Cups

Keurig's new brewer swaps the plastic pod for a pressed round of coffee in a plant-based coating, and still takes K-Cups. What is confirmed, what is still unclear, and how it compares.

The Keurig Alta is a single-serve brewer built around AltaRounds: ground coffee pressed into a round and sealed in a plant-based coating instead of a plastic or aluminium pod. It is the first time Keurig has moved away from the K-Cup as the thing you buy every week, and it does so without abandoning it, because the Alta still brews ordinary K-Cups.

What are Keurig AltaRounds?

The short answer

A puck of compressed coffee with no container around it, held together by a plant-based coating that goes in the bin or the compost with the grounds.

Keurig describes the outer layer as a proprietary plant-based coating, and a Keurig Dr Pepper executive has said it is alginate, a material usually made from seaweed. The coating holds the round together and keeps the coffee fresh, which is the point: there is no cup to separate, rinse or send back.

Each box holds eight rounds. At launch there are coffee and double-shot espresso styles, sold as The House, Double Shot, Bold Ambition and Sweet Spot, with more styles and brands promised later.

How the Keurig Alta brews coffee and espresso

Brew recognition

The round sets the brew

Each round carries a code the machine reads, and that code sets how it is brewed, so an espresso round and a coffee round get different treatment without you choosing a setting.

High pressure

Why espresso is possible

A standard K-Cup brewer pushes water through the pod at low pressure, which makes a filter-style cup; espresso needs far more force through a tightly packed bed of coffee. Keurig describes high-pressure brewing.

Milk

A built-in frother

Used automatically or as a manual steam wand, it puts lattes and cappuccinos within reach of a Keurig for the first time.

How close the Alta's shot comes to one from an espresso machine is something only testing will show, and we have not tested it.

Does the Keurig Alta take K-Cups?

Why it matters

Keurig calls the Alta backward compatible: it brews the K-Cups people already have in the cupboard, from any of the many brands that make them.

This is the detail that separates the Alta from other pod-free systems. AltaRounds work only in the Alta, so the new format is a choice you make pod by pod rather than a system you are locked into. If you are weighing it against the brewers you can buy today, our list of Keurig coffee makers ranks the current range.

Keurig Alta price and launch bundle

Keurig opened the Alta as a Limited Early Access Bundle sold through its own Keurig Alta site. Outlets report the price at $499.99. Keurig's page estimates shipping from October 21, 2026, and the bundle was showing as sold out when we checked, with a sign-up for news of the wider release.

Keurig Alta: AltaRound price, compostability and release still unknown

Three things matter before this is worth buying, and none is settled yet.

The price of a round

This is what decides the running cost of any pod system, and early reports are thin. Our guide to what a pod costs per cup shows why that number outweighs the machine price within a year or two.

Compostability

Keurig presents the rounds as plastic-free and made to be composted, but reports on formal certification disagree, so the wording on the box is what to trust.

The brewer on its own

A standalone price, published specifications and a retail release are all still to come.

Keurig Alta vs Lavazza Tabli

Lavazza got here first. Its Tabli tabs are also compressed coffee in a coating, with no capsule, made for a dedicated machine. We cover them in our explainer on Lavazza Tabli. The two ideas are close; the practical difference is the escape hatch.

Keurig Alta

Brews AltaRounds and K-Cups, so a household can try the rounds without giving up the pods it already likes.

Lavazza Tabli

The Tabli machine brews only Tabli tabs, so the format is all or nothing.

For the wider picture of what pod waste really involves, see our guide to compostable coffee pods.

Should you buy the Keurig Alta now?

The short answer

For most people, yes. A first-run bundle sold out in limited numbers is an early-adopter purchase, and the facts that decide value, the price per round, certification and the brewer on its own, are not out yet.

If you need a brewer now, a current K-Cup machine does the job and nothing you buy for it is wasted, because the Alta takes the same pods. We will review the Alta when it is on general sale and add it to our pod and capsule machine rankings.

Keurig Alta FAQ

Does the Keurig Alta take regular K-Cups?

Yes. Keurig describes the Alta system as backward compatible, so it brews existing K-Cup pods as well as AltaRounds. AltaRounds, on the other hand, only work in the Alta.

What are AltaRounds made of?

Ground coffee pressed into a round and sealed in what Keurig calls a proprietary plant-based coating, with no plastic or aluminium capsule. A Keurig Dr Pepper executive has described the coating as alginate, which is usually made from seaweed.

Are AltaRounds compostable?

Keurig presents them as plastic-free and built to be composted, but reports on formal compostable certification disagree, so check the wording on the box before you put them in a home compost or a municipal food waste bin.

How much does the Keurig Alta cost?

Keurig launched it as a Limited Early Access Bundle, reported at $499.99, with the brewer, a glassware set and six boxes of AltaRounds. A price for the brewer on its own had not been announced when we checked.

When does the Keurig Alta ship?

Keurig's own page gives an estimated start of October 21, 2026 for the Early Access Bundles. Wider retail availability had not been announced when we checked.

Can the Keurig Alta make espresso and milk drinks?

Keurig sells double-shot espresso AltaRounds alongside coffee rounds, describes high-pressure brewing, and builds in a milk frother with automatic frothing or a manual steam wand, so lattes and cappuccinos are part of the plan.

Is the Keurig Alta the same idea as Lavazza Tabli?

Very close. Both replace the capsule with compressed coffee in a coating that dissolves or composts, and both need their own machine. The difference is that the Alta also takes K-Cups, while the Tabli machine takes only Tabli tabs.
