What is Nespresso Vertuo Stormio?
The dark, low-acid mug coffee in Nespresso's Vertuo range.
Nespresso describes an all-Arabica blend of Nicaraguan and Guatemalan beans roasted dark, with wood and spice notes, and positions it as a long black or Americano.
Rated 8 of 12, brewing 230ml, at $14.00 a sleeve of ten, which is $1.40 a capsule and the same as every other Vertuo mug capsule.
Which machines does it fit?
Nespresso Vertuo machines only.
Vertuo capsules carry a barcode on the rim that tells the machine what size to pour, which is how this one fills a 230ml mug without you touching a setting. An Original machine cannot read it or hold it.
It is also why there is no cheaper version of this coffee and never will be. The machine brews only capsules Nespresso has encoded, so no third-party roaster can compete inside the system.
What is in the capsule

The published panel is what makes this capsule legible: bitterness 4 of 5, roastiness 4 of 5, acidity 1 of 5. That last number is the lowest in the Vertuo range and it is the reason to buy this rather than Melozio or Odacio.
Naming both countries is worth noting too. Melozio says Brazil and Latin America; this says Nicaragua and Guatemala, which is as specific as Nespresso gets outside its Master Origin line.
The dose is published, in the Contents and Allergens panel rather than beside the price: 125g for a sleeve of ten, so 12.5g a capsule.
What a cup costs

The standard Vertuo mug price, identical to Melozio and Odacio, so the choice between the three is entirely about the coffee.
That per-pod figure is the one every box is priced in, and on its own it misleads. Nespresso publishes a net weight of 125g for a sleeve of ten of these, 12.5g of coffee each, against 5.0g in an Original espresso capsule. So $1.40 a pod here works out at $112 a kilo where Original's 90 cents is $180. This is the more expensive cup and the cheaper coffee, and no box tells you that. It is the format that carries the difference, not the system. Vertuo's espresso-format capsules hold about 6g, and the Ristretto Intenso at $1.08 works out at $180 a kilo, which is exactly what an Original capsule costs.
Against the wider category the per-pod price is still high: the cheapest pod on this site is 64 cents, and Vertuo offers no bulk box to close the gap.
What happens to the capsule afterwards

Stormio vs Melozio
The two ends of the Vertuo mug range, at the same price.
Melozio is rated 6 with acidity 1 of 5 and honeyed cereal notes; Stormio is rated 8 with acidity 1 of 5 and wood and spice. Both are low-acid, and the difference is body and roast rather than brightness.
Melozio is the one most machines ship with and the safer everyday capsule. Stormio is what to buy when Melozio starts tasting like not very much. Melozio also has a decaf version and Stormio does not.
Is Stormio worth it?
On a Vertuo, if you want a dark mug of coffee, it is the obvious one.
It does a specific job and publishes the numbers that prove it does it. Two named countries and an all-Arabica claim are more disclosure than most capsules manage.
The price is the system's rather than the coffee's. $1.40 a mug is around $42 a month for one a day, with no bulk option available.
Who should buy it (and who should not)
Vertuo owners who drink long black coffee and want it dark.
Buy it if Melozio is too mild and you drink your coffee black. Buy it if you want to know which countries the beans came from.
Do not buy it if you want brightness or fruit, because acidity 1 of 5 is a deliberate choice against both. Do not buy it if you need a decaf, because this capsule has none.
