How Many Calories Are in Coffee?
Black coffee is about two. Everything above that number comes from what you put in it, and the range runs to several hundred.
A cup of black coffee has about two calories. Espresso has roughly one. For practical purposes, coffee itself is not a source of calories at all, and everything you have ever read about a coffee being high in them is about what was added to it.
Where the two calories come from
Brewing pulls a small amount of soluble material out of the beans: trace proteins, some oils, and a little soluble fibre. It adds up to a rounding error. Unsweetened black coffee, americano and long black are all in the same negligible range, and so is black cold brew.
Coffee does contain fibre, which surprises people, and it is still a trivial quantity by the standards of anything you would eat.
What each addition costs you
A splash of semi-skimmed milk is around 10 calories. A teaspoon of sugar is about 16. Those are the two that most people use and both are small. The arithmetic only turns serious when the milk becomes the drink rather than a splash.
A latte is mostly milk, so a medium one made with whole milk lands somewhere around 190 to 220 calories, and the same drink with skimmed milk is closer to 120. A cappuccino is smaller and partly air, so it comes in lower, typically 110 to 150. A flat white sits between them and is smaller than both with less foam, usually 150 to 180.
Syrup is the thing that changes the category
A pump of flavoured syrup is roughly 20 calories and chain drinks routinely use three or four. Add whipped cream, sauce and a larger size and a blended coffee drink reaches 400 to 500, which is not a coffee with extras any more, it is a milkshake with coffee in it. Nothing wrong with that, but it is worth knowing which one you have ordered.
The drinks that stay low
Espresso, americano, long black and black filter are all effectively zero. A macchiato in the original sense is an espresso with a spoonful of foam, so it is in single figures. A cortado uses a small amount of milk and lands around 40 to 60.
If you are trying to keep the number down without drinking it black, moving down the milk scale does far more than switching to skimmed: a cortado with whole milk has fewer calories than a skimmed latte, because the volume matters more than the fat percentage.
Milk alternatives are not automatically lighter
Oat milk is often similar to semi-skimmed and sometimes higher, because the enzymatic process that makes oats drinkable produces sugars. Unsweetened almond is usually the lowest by a clear margin. Soy is close to dairy. Barista versions of all of them contain added fat to make them foam, so they are higher than the supermarket carton of the same brand.
Iced and cold brew change the arithmetic
Black cold brew is the same negligible number as hot black coffee, and often tastes sweeter without containing any sugar, because the cold extraction pulls fewer bitter compounds. That makes it the easiest black coffee to drink unsweetened, which is a real and underrated way to cut the number.
Iced lattes go the other way. The glass is larger, the ice displaces some of the milk but not all of it, and iced versions are far more likely to arrive pre-sweetened. An iced coffee described as sweetened on a menu is usually carrying syrup rather than a spoon of sugar.
What the number does not tell you
Calories are not the only reason people ask this. Black coffee is also effectively free of sugar, and the caffeine content is unrelated to any of it: caffeine tracks how much coffee was used rather than how large or how milky the drink is. A small strong espresso and a large milky latte can carry the same caffeine and differ by two hundred calories.
These are typical figures rather than measurements of any particular drink. Cup sizes vary enormously between countries and chains, and the size is usually the biggest single variable.
Common questions
How many calories are in black coffee?
About two per cup, and roughly one in an espresso. Brewing extracts only trace amounts of protein, oil and soluble fibre, so for practical purposes black coffee is not a source of calories.
Which coffee drink has the fewest calories?
Espresso, americano, long black and black filter are all effectively zero. If you want milk, a macchiato is in single figures and a cortado is around 40 to 60, because both use very little.
Is oat milk lower in calories than dairy?
Usually not by much, and sometimes higher. The process that makes oats drinkable creates sugars, and barista versions add fat so they will foam. Unsweetened almond is normally the lowest of the common alternatives.
