Not every coffee drink starts with espresso. These are the drinks built on ordinary brewed coffee: what drip coffee is, the café au lait and the caffe misto, which are both brewed coffee with hot milk, and the red eye, a cup of drip coffee with a shot of espresso added.
What Is a Café au Lait?Brewed coffee and hot milk in roughly equal parts. The thing that makes it distinct is the one most recipes get wrong: there is no espresso in it.
What Is a Caffe Misto?Brewed coffee topped with an equal amount of steamed milk. The chain-cafe name for a very old drink, and a lighter alternative to a latte.
What Is a Red Eye Coffee Drink?Drip coffee with a shot of espresso in it. The name comes from the flight you drink it on, and the family it belongs to goes darker from there.
What Is Drip Coffee?Drip coffee is hot water passed once through ground coffee in a filter. It is the everyday coffee of American kitchens and offices, and a few specifications decide whether a machine makes it well.
