What is the Hamilton Beach Electric Burr Grinder?

A big, plain, well-priced grinder built around convenience rather than precision.

Hamilton Beach publishes 18 grind settings running from extra-fine to coarse, a 2 to 14 cup selector, a 16oz hopper, a snap-on lid on the grounds container, a top burr that unscrews for cleaning with a brush included, dishwasher-safe containers and lids, stainless steel and plastic construction, and a weight of about 1.45kg. It does not publish whether the burrs are flat or conical, or what size they are.

Sixteen ounces of beans, and the honest cost of that

The largest hopper in this category, and the reason to think twice about filling it.

454g of beans is most of a retail bag, and a hopper that size is genuinely convenient for a household grinding several times a day. Fill it on Sunday and forget it.

The cost is staling. Beans keep best sealed, cool and dark, and a hopper is none of those things. Coffee left in one for a week tastes flatter than the same beans from the bag, and no grind setting recovers it. The useful compromise is to treat the capacity as headroom rather than as storage: fill what you will use in two or three days.

Dishwasher-safe parts, which almost nothing here offers

Grinders get sticky, and most of them have to be cleaned by hand.

Coffee oils build up and go rancid, and a grinder that is annoying to clean is a grinder that stays dirty. Hamilton Beach publishes the containers and lids as dishwasher safe and the top burr as removable with a brush in the box.

That is a mundane advantage that shows up every week, and it is a fair reason to choose this over a better-specified grinder you will not maintain.

Hamilton Beach vs OXO Brew Conical Burr

Two mainstream electric grinders, and one of them tells you what is inside it.

The OXO publishes 40mm stainless conical burrs. Burr size and material are the two facts that most predict grind quality, and Hamilton Beach publishes neither.

Hamilton Beach answers with the bigger hopper, more settings on paper, the dishwasher parts and usually a lower price. For a household that wants ground coffee with minimum fuss, that is a reasonable trade. For anybody chasing the cup, the OXO is the better machine.

Is the Hamilton Beach worth it?

Worth it as a convenience appliance, not as a step up in quality.

It is cheap, big, easy to clean and simple to use, and it will grind far better than the blade grinder most people are replacing. That is a real improvement and it should not be sniffed at.

Against grinders that publish burr specifications, it scores lower and deserves to. An unstated burr size is not a hidden strength.

Who should buy the Hamilton Beach (and who should not)

Buy it for a busy household that grinds a lot and wants it uncomplicated.

It suits a family, a shared kitchen or an office, anybody upgrading from a blade grinder, and people who will actually use the dishwasher-safe parts. The maker also suggests herbs and spices, which a dedicated coffee grinder should never be used for, so buy a second one if that appeals.

Do not buy it for espresso, where 18 stepped positions and unknown burrs are the wrong tool. And do not fill the hopper to the top unless you will drink it within a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the Hamilton Beach hopper?

16oz, about 454g of beans, which is the largest in this category.

Are the Hamilton Beach parts dishwasher safe?

The containers and lids are, per the maker. The top burr unscrews for cleaning and a brush is included.

What burrs does it use?

Hamilton Beach does not publish the burr type, size or material, so we record none. That absence is the main reason it scores below grinders that state theirs.

Can it grind for espresso?

The maker publishes settings from extra-fine to coarse and names espresso, but eighteen stepped positions is coarse resolution for espresso dialling.
