The rows that apply here are worth 2.5 between them and this one took 1.25, which is 5.0 out of 10. That 0–10 result is what the criterion's 19.8 of 69.8 points are then scaled by.

The verdict

Urnex Grindz is a grinder cleaning product supplied as three single use packets of food-safe, chlorine-free tablets. They are run through a burr grinder in place of coffee, clearing oils and old grounds without the grinder being dismantled.

Pros

  • The only product here that cleans a grinder rather than a brewer, and grinder burrs hold rancid oil that no brew cycle reaches
  • Natural, chlorine free and food safe
  • $13.49, the least expensive accessory here

Cons

  • Three single-use packets, so it is three cleans
  • It needs a burr grinder: it will not help a blade grinder
  • 130g, and no price per clean is published

What is Urnex Grindz?

A cleaning product you grind rather than one you wipe with.

Urnex publishes three single use packets, a natural chlorine-free formulation and a total weight of 130g. The tablets are poured into the hopper in place of beans and ground through, carrying away accumulated oils and stale grounds, after which a small dose of coffee is ground and discarded to clear the residue.

Urnex states plainly that it should not be used in super-automatic machines, which is the sort of caveat worth reading before rather than after.

Why a grinder needs this at all

Coffee is oily, and the oil does not leave on its own.

Every dose leaves a film on the burrs and in the chute. That film oxidises, turns rancid, and then flavours every subsequent grind with something stale that no amount of good beans will cover. It also traps fines, which slowly changes the grind size the machine actually delivers, so a setting that worked last month quietly stops working.

Dismantling a burr set is the thorough answer and most people never do it. Grinding a tablet through takes two minutes and reaches the same surfaces, which is why this product exists.

What it does not do

It cleans burrs, not machines, and the distinction matters.

Grindz is for grinders. Scale in a boiler and coffee oil in a group head are different problems with different products, and running the wrong one is at best wasted and at worst damaging. Urnex makes separate descalers and machine cleaners for those jobs.

The super-automatic exclusion follows the same logic: those machines have an internal grinder feeding a sealed brew unit, and the residue has nowhere clean to go.

Where it fits on this site

Every burr grinder we have measured is a candidate, and the ones with the most to lose are the adjustable ones.

A grinder that holds a fine, repeatable setting is exactly the grinder whose setting drifts when the burrs foul. That includes hand grinders as much as electric ones, since the burrs and the chute are the same problem in a smaller body.

If your machine is a super-automatic such as the Philips 4300 LatteGo, this is not the product for it.

Is Urnex Grindz worth it?

Three packets is a year for most home grinders, which makes this the cheapest maintenance on the shelf.

Against the price of the grinder it protects, the arithmetic is not close. The formulation being food safe and chlorine free matters because the residue path ends in your coffee, and Urnex publishes both.

What it will not do is rescue a grinder with worn burrs. Cleaning restores a setting that has drifted; it does not restore metal that has dulled.

Who should buy it (and who should not)

Buy it if you grind daily and have never cleaned the burrs.

It suits anybody who has noticed their usual setting producing a different shot, or an old coffee smell from the hopper. It is also the sensible thing to run through a second-hand grinder before trusting it.

Do not buy it for a super-automatic machine, because Urnex advises against it. And do not buy it expecting it to descale anything: that is a different product for a different fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you clean a coffee grinder?

For a home grinder used daily, every few months is a reasonable rhythm, and three packets covers roughly a year. Heavier use or oily dark roasts justify more.

Is Urnex Grindz safe for coffee?

Urnex publishes it as natural and chlorine free. The usual practice is to grind and discard a small dose of coffee afterwards to clear any residue before brewing.

Can you use Grindz in a super-automatic machine?

No. Urnex states it is not recommended for super-automatic coffee makers, where the grinder feeds a sealed brew unit.

Does Grindz work in a hand grinder?

The burrs and chute foul the same way in a manual grinder, and the tablets are ground through in the same manner. The limitation is capacity rather than principle.
