What is the Hario Switch 03?
The larger Switch, and the only meaningful difference from the 02 is how much it holds.
Hario publishes a 360ml capacity, a heatproof glass cone, a stainless steel ball valve operated by a plastic switch, compatibility with size 03 V60 papers, and 40 filters in the box. It measures 115 by 130 by 215mm.
Everything else is the Switch 02: close the valve and the coffee steeps, open it and it drains through paper like a V60.
360ml against 200ml, and why the size is the whole decision
The 02 is one mug. This is two, or one large one.
A 200ml brew is a single cup and nothing more, which is fine if you drink alone and brew fresh. The moment a second person wants coffee you are brewing twice, and immersion brewing is slow enough that doing it twice is genuinely annoying.
360ml covers two normal mugs. It also gives you room to brew a stronger single and dilute, which is the usual way of getting a consistent cup out of a variable bean.
The cost is the opposite problem. A large cone with a small dose in it has a shallower bed, and a shallow bed extracts differently. If you almost always brew one cup, the 02 is the better tool and this one will make you work harder for the same result.
Filters, and the running cost
03 papers, and they are not the same as 02 papers.
The Switch 03 takes size 03 V60 filters, which are larger and cost slightly more per sheet than the 02s. Forty come in the box, which is a few weeks.
If you already own a V60 in size 02, note that its papers will not fit this. Matching sizes across your Hario gear is worth a moment's thought before ordering, and the 02 papers we list are the wrong ones for this dripper.
Switch 03 vs Clever Coffee Dripper
The two immersion drippers, and they differ on material and on how they open.
The Clever holds 532ml, costs less, and opens by gravity when set on a mug. It is Tritan plastic.
The Switch is glass with a stainless valve, holds less, and opens on a switch you press deliberately. That deliberateness is the point for some people: a Clever set down on a flat surface starts draining, and a Switch does not.
Is the Switch 03 worth it?
Worth it if you brew for two. Otherwise buy the 02.
Glass and stainless is the better material pairing in this category, and the valve is the most controlled version of this idea. The price is meaningfully above the Clever for less capacity, and what that buys is the build and the switch.
Hario publishes no warranty and no weight for it, and it is paper-only with no reusable filter offered.
Who should buy the Switch 03 (and who should not)
Buy it if two people drink filter coffee and you want one brew to cover both.
It suits a couple, a small office, or anybody who has owned the 02 and been irritated by its single-cup ceiling. It brews as a pour over as well, so it replaces a V60 rather than joining it.
Do not buy it if you brew one cup a day; the 02 is cheaper and better at that. And if you want the cheapest route into immersion brewing, the Clever holds more for less.
