What is Urnex Dezcal?
The descaling powder most coffee machines are meant to be cleaned with.
Urnex publishes a 900g bottle, compatibility across Keurig, Nespresso, Breville, Jura, De'Longhi and other drip makers, espresso machines, superautomatics and kettles, and action on boilers, heating elements, faucets, spray heads and milk systems. It is published as faster and more effective than vinegar, and odourless.
What limescale does, and why it kills machines
It is not dirt. It is rock, and it grows on the hottest surface in the machine.
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated, those come out of solution and deposit as a hard white crust, and they do it preferentially on the hottest thing available, which is the heating element.
Once an element is coated it has to work harder to push heat through the layer, so it runs hotter and the machine takes longer to reach temperature. Eventually the brew temperature drifts down, the coffee tastes weak and sour, and the element fails. Most coffee machines that die young die of this.
Scale also narrows the water paths. A blocked spray head waters the puck unevenly, which produces exactly the channelling a puck screen is bought to fix, from a cause no accessory can help with.
Why not vinegar
It half works, it smells, and on some machines it does damage.
Vinegar is acetic acid and it will dissolve scale given long enough. The problems are that it is weak, so it needs multiple passes; that it is aggressive toward some rubber seals and aluminium boilers; and that the smell persists through several rinse cycles, which is why the first two coffees after a vinegar descale taste of chips.
Dezcal is a formulated acid designed for the job. Urnex publishes it as faster, more effective and odourless, and that is the honest reason to buy a purpose-made product rather than reach under the sink.
Dezcal vs Cleancaf, which are not interchangeable
The most common mistake in coffee maintenance is buying one and thinking it does both jobs.
Dezcal removes mineral scale from the water side of the machine. Urnex Cleancaf removes coffee oils and residue from the coffee side.
They attack different deposits, and neither does the other's work. A machine that is descaled but never cleaned brews bitter, rancid coffee at the right temperature. A machine that is cleaned but never descaled brews clean-tasting coffee that gets colder every month until it stops. Owning both is the answer, and 900g of Dezcal lasts a long time.
Is it worth it?
Yes, and it is the cheapest insurance available on an expensive machine.
900g is many descales. Against the cost of an espresso machine or a superautomatic, this is a rounding error that materially extends the machine's life.
Urnex publishes no dosing figure per descale on this listing and no country of manufacture, so we record neither. Follow your machine's manual for quantities.
Who should buy it (and who should not)
Buy it if you have any machine that heats water, and especially in a hard water area.
It suits pod machines, espresso machines, drip makers and kettles alike, which is why the 900g bottle makes sense: one purchase covers everything in the kitchen. If you can see white crust in your kettle, your coffee machine has the same thing inside it.
Some machines specify their own branded descaler for warranty purposes; check yours before using anything else. And this is not a cleaner, so it will not fix coffee that tastes stale.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale?
It depends entirely on water hardness. In a hard water area every one to three months is normal; with soft water, twice a year may be enough. Your machine's manual is the guide.
Can I use vinegar instead?
It works slowly and can attack seals and aluminium boilers, and the smell lingers through several rinses. Urnex publishes Dezcal as faster, more effective and odourless.
Is descaling the same as cleaning?
No. Descaling removes mineral scale from the water path. Cleaning removes coffee oils from the coffee path. You need both.
Will it work on my machine?
Urnex publishes compatibility with Keurig, Nespresso, Breville, Jura, De'Longhi and other drip makers, espresso machines, superautomatics and kettles.
