What is Podium Coffee Club?
A coffee club with one rule: every roaster must have won something.
Podium Coffee Club picks one coffee a month from a US roaster that has placed at a major coffee competition, and sends it to you within 24 hours of roasting. It was founded in 2023, first as awardwinningcoffee.com, by Sam and Paul: Sam is a multi-award-winning roaster, a certified Q grader and a founding partner of California's Theory Coffee, and Paul came from digital marketing. The company says it is independent, with no venture capital behind it.
There are two plans, and both send 300 g of whole beans, roasted light or light-medium, from a different roaster every month. Members also get first access to Podium Flash, limited one-off coffees sold to anybody on its list, 24 hours before everyone else.
Podium Gold vs Podium Platinum
Familiar flavours, or rare varieties and experimental processing.
| Plan | 300 g a month | Per kilo | With $5 shipping | Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Podium Gold | $24.50 | $81.67 | $98.33 a kilo | Cocoa, brown sugar, soft spices, sweet aromatics |
| Podium Platinum | $29.50 | $98.33 | $115.00 a kilo | Rare varieties, experimental processing, fruit and florals |
Gold is the one for somebody moving up from supermarket coffee: classic chocolate and sugar notes, done well. Platinum is for the curious, with the kind of coffees that turn up in competition, which can be surprising. Both are also listed in 3 lb and 5 lb sizes, at $105 and $166.50 for Gold and $127 and $200 for Platinum, which brings Gold down to $73.41 a kilo at 5 lb.
How it works
Charged on sign-up, then on the 1st, shipped between the 5th and 10th.
Your card is charged the day you join and the first coffee arrives in 10 to 14 days. After that you are billed on the 1st of each month and the coffee ships between the 5th and the 10th. Shipping is a flat $5 to all 50 US states. There is no minimum term: you can edit, pause or cancel in the customer portal or by contacting Podium, and a prepaid gift plan simply ends rather than renewing. Podium does not send decaf on either plan, and it does not offer ground coffee.
If you are new to subscriptions, our guide to how coffee subscriptions work covers the billing traps to watch for, and Podium avoids most of them.
What a Podium coffee looks like
Each one comes with its roaster's awards and the coffee's details.
Podium's Flash listings show the format. One recent release was a Guatemalan Pink Bourbon from producer Raul Solis Paiz, roasted by Theory Coffee: natural process, grown at 1,350 to 1,550 metres, with notes of raspberry, white chocolate and hibiscus, $24 for 300 g. The listing names the roaster's competition wins, the producer, the variety, the process and the altitude. That is the level of detail to expect, and it is more than many supermarket bags or roaster subscriptions give you.
Freshness is the real selling point
Shipped within a day of roasting, by a curator.
Curated subscriptions usually buy roasted coffee from many roasters and post it on, which is where days get lost. Podium says every coffee ships within 24 hours of roasting. That is the kind of figure roasters selling their own beans publish, and few curators do. Light roasts in particular reward freshness and a good grinder, so it suits a reader who already grinds at home; see whole bean or ground for a subscription.
The conflict worth knowing about
A curator with a roaster of its own.
Podium's co-founder is a founding partner of Theory Coffee, and Podium has sold a Theory coffee as one of its Flash releases. Podium says so openly on its own pages, which is to its credit, and Theory's awards are real. Still, a curator that also owns part of a roaster has a reason to pick it, so it is worth knowing when you judge how independent the selection is.
Podium Coffee Club vs Bean Box
Fewer, award-winning roasters, or many more for less.
The Bean Box Coffee Subscription rotates through 64 named American roasters at $19.50 for 340 g, $57.32 a kilo, with eight tasting plans, ground or whole bean and a choice of frequency. It is cheaper and more flexible. Podium narrows the field to competition winners, adds a 24-hour roast-to-ship promise and asks a third more per kilo for it. For variety and value, Bean Box; for a monthly coffee from a podium roaster, Podium.
Is Podium Coffee Club worth it?
For light-roast lovers who grind at home, yes. For anyone else, probably not.
It is a narrow club by design: whole bean, light roasts, monthly, award-winners only. If that is what you drink, the freshness and the curation are real, and there is no contract to regret. If you want darker roasts, ground coffee, decaf or a cheaper kilo, the rules that make Podium what it is are the reasons to look elsewhere.
