How Dolly Parton's Cup of Ambition Light Roast tastes

The roaster’s own notes, in the order they list them. Roasters lead with what they want tasted first, so the bars follow that order rather than any score of ours.

Every way to buy it

FormatSizePricePer kiloPer cup
Ground340 g (12 oz)$12.99$38.18$0.57
K-Cup pods (pre-order, ships after 15 October)10 pods$12.99—$1.30
How these prices are worked out
  • Prices are the roaster’s own, and they change.
  • A pod box has no per-kilo figure. It is priced per cup, and dividing by a guessed pod weight would be a made-up number.
  • Per cup for a bag is worked out at 15 g of coffee a cup, which is a stated convention rather than a measurement. Pods are exact, because the count is printed on the box.
The verdict

Cup of Ambition Light Roast is the lightest coffee in Dolly Parton's line, made with Community Coffee: a 100% Arabica blend with notes of vanilla, stone fruit and cocoa nib, a light body and gentle brightness. It costs $12.99 for a 12 oz bag of ground coffee, about 57 cents a cup, or $12.99 for 10 K-Cup pods.

Pros

  • 100% Arabica, with sweet notes of vanilla, stone fruit and cocoa nib.
  • About 57 cents a cup from the 12 oz bag.
  • Ground for drip, pour over, French press, percolator and cold brew.
  • Every cup supports Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

Cons

  • Ground only; no whole bean.
  • No origin or roast date published.
  • The K-Cups cost $1.30 each and ship from mid October.

What is Cup of Ambition Light Roast?

The gentlest of Dolly Parton's three coffees, meant for slow mornings.

Cup of Ambition Light Roast is described by its makers as an inviting coffee with notes of vanilla, stone fruit and cocoa nib. Its light body and gentle brightness give way to a lasting sweetness, and they pitch it as an easy-drinking cup for slow mornings and breakfast. It is sold ground in a 12 oz bag, and as K-Cup pods in boxes of ten.

What Cup of Ambition is

Dolly Parton's own coffee line, made with a Louisiana roaster that has been at it since 1919.

Cup of Ambition is Dolly Parton's coffee brand, named after a line in "9 to 5" and developed with Community Coffee, a family-owned Louisiana roaster founded in 1919. It went on sale online on 29 September 2026 in three roasts, and every cup supports Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Our guide to Cup of Ambition tells the story of the line and compares all three roasts.

What a light roast means here

More of the coffee, less of the roast.

A light roast stops earlier, so it keeps more of the coffee's own acidity and fruit and less of the bitter, toasty flavour that roasting adds. That is why this one lists stone fruit and vanilla rather than chocolate and smoke. It will taste brighter and thinner than most supermarket coffee, which is the point, and it tends to taste best black. If you usually drink a dark roast with milk, the Cup of Ambition Dark Roast is the one made for that; the Cup of Ambition Medium Roast sits between the two.

Price, and what a cup costs

Supermarket money, and the ground bag is much cheaper per cup than the pods.

FormatPricePer kiloPer cup
Ground, 340 g (12 oz)$12.99$38.18$0.57 at 15 g
K-Cup pods, 10 count$12.99n/a$1.30 a pod

At 15 g a cup, the standard we use across the site, a 12 oz bag makes about 22 cups, at 57 cents each. The pods cost $1.30 each, more than twice as much per cup, which is the usual price of convenience. The pods are on pre-order and are expected to ship from 15 October 2026. Everything is sold in the US only, and the official store marks it final sale. A subscription on cupofambition.com saves 20% and ships free, which takes a bag to about $10.39.

For comparison, the single origins from Fresh Roasted Coffee cost $14.99 to $18.99 for 12 oz, roasted to order with the date on the bag. Cup of Ambition is a little cheaper and much easier to find; Fresh Roasted is fresher and tells you more.

Cup of Ambition Light vs Stumptown Founder's Blend

Similar notes, very different buying.

The Stumptown Founder's Blend Medium Roast lists vanilla and cocoa powder, close to Cup of Ambition Light's vanilla and cocoa nib, but it is a medium roast sold as whole bean from a specialty roaster. Cup of Ambition is lighter, ground, cheaper and easier to find. If you have a grinder and want a specialty coffee, Stumptown. If you want the vanilla and cocoa style in a ground bag at 57 cents a cup, Cup of Ambition.

How to brew it

Ground for any brewer, and the maker gives its own dose.

The bag recommends 2 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 oz of filtered water, which is roughly 10 to 12 g to 180 ml, close to the 1:15 to 1:18 range most brewing guides use. It is ground for drip machines, pour over, French press, percolators and cold brew, so one grind has to serve all of them: it will be a little fine for a French press and a little coarse for a cone. Our coffee to water ratio guide explains how to adjust strength without changing the grind. For the pods, the maker recommends the 10 oz setting on a Keurig.

A light roast is denser and harder to extract than a dark one, so give it the full dose: two properly heaped tablespoons, not level ones, and water just off the boil. A cone pour over shows the vanilla and stone fruit best, since the paper filter keeps the cup clean; our pour over guide covers the method. If it tastes sour or thin, slow the pour or use a little more coffee. It also makes a gentle, sweet cold brew, steeped overnight in the fridge.

What the bag does not tell you

The usual gaps of a supermarket blend.

Cup of Ambition is 100% Arabica, but neither the store nor the bag says which countries the coffees come from, and there is no roast date on the back label, only the reclosable bag with tin ties to keep it fresh once open. No certification is claimed. None of that is unusual for a coffee made for grocery shelves, and the Arabica claim is worth having, but it means the tasting notes are the only guide to what is in the bag. If you want to know the farm or the roast date, a specialty roaster is the place to look.

Is it worth it?

Yes, as an easy, sweet everyday coffee with a good cause behind it.

At 57 cents a cup it is fairly priced for a 100% Arabica blend from a long-established roaster, and the light roast is the most interesting of the three on paper. It is not a specialty coffee, and it does not pretend to be; the value is in an easy cup, a name you trust and the Imagination Library behind it.

Who should buy it (and who should not)

Buy it if

  • You like a gentle, sweet cup, black, in the morning.
  • You brew in a drip machine or percolator and buy ground coffee.
  • You are a Dolly fan, or want the Imagination Library to benefit.

Skip it if

  • You want whole bean, a roast date or a named origin.
  • You drink coffee with plenty of milk; take the Dark Roast.
