How Stumptown Founder's Blend Medium Roast tastes

The roaster’s own notes, in the order they list them. Roasters lead with what they want tasted first, so the bars follow that order rather than any score of ours.

Cons

  • No price is published for it here

What is Founder's Blend?

The uncomplicated one, and the only Stumptown here aimed at drinking all day.

Stumptown publishes clean and sweet organic Central and South American beans, a juicy and approachable cup, tasting notes of vanilla and cocoa powder, 100% arabica, Direct Trade sourcing, and describes it as a dose of Central American sunshine, simple and chocolate-forward, full-bodied, an all day everyday drinker. The bag is 12oz, sold as a pack of two.

One region instead of three, and why that makes it simpler

Central and South America only, which narrows the flavour deliberately.

Hair Bender reaches across three continents to build complexity. This stays in one region, where the coffees share a family resemblance: balanced, nutty, chocolatey, with soft rather than sharp acidity.

The result is a cup with less going on and less that can go wrong. There is no bright African acidity to turn sour if you under-extract, and no Indonesian earthiness to turn muddy if you over-extract. That is what "approachable" means in practice and it is a legitimate design goal rather than a lesser one.

If you find specialty coffee fussy or you are brewing for people who take milk and sugar, this is the Stumptown to buy.

Organic on top of Direct Trade

Two different claims about two different things, and this blend carries both.

Direct Trade is about the commercial relationship: what the farmer was paid and how long the roaster has bought from them. Organic is about the farming: no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, audited, with a segregated supply chain.

They are independent. A Direct Trade coffee can be conventionally farmed and an organic coffee can be bought at commodity prices through a broker. Founder's Blend and French Roast are the two here carrying both, which is the strongest combination in this range.

Vanilla and cocoa powder, from roasting rather than flavouring

Worth stating, because those two words also describe flavoured coffee.

Vanilla is a common descriptor for the sweet, rounded aromatics that develop in a well-managed medium roast, and cocoa powder for the dry chocolate character of Central American beans. Neither is added.

A flavoured coffee is made by spraying roasted beans with flavour compounds in a carrier, and it leaves residue in grinders. Stumptown is a specialty roaster and does not do that to this blend, but "vanilla" on a bag is exactly where the confusion happens.

Founder's Blend vs Homestead

Both medium, and the difference is whether you want fruit.

Homestead adds East African lots and publishes cherry and orange alongside milk chocolate. It is the brighter, more acidic cup.

Founder's Blend stays chocolatey and soft, and adds organic certification, which Homestead does not carry. If you want to taste fruit, Homestead. If you want a cup nobody in the house will complain about, this.

Is Founder's Blend worth it?

Worth it as a daily bag, and it is the least demanding coffee here.

Organic, Direct Trade, a published roast date and an approachable profile is a lot to get in one bag, and it is the Stumptown that suits a household rather than an enthusiast.

Stumptown publishes no farm, no altitude, no varietal beyond 100% arabica, and no processing method for this blend. Two 12oz bags is 24oz of coffee and the maker's own advice is two weeks per opened bag.

Who should buy it (and who should not)

Buy it for everyday drinking, especially with milk.

It suits a household where several people brew, a drip machine, and anybody who wants organic without giving up approachability.

Do not buy it chasing acidity or fruit, which it deliberately avoids. And do not expect origin detail beyond the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Founder's Blend organic?

Yes, and it is also Direct Trade. Those are separate claims: one about farming, one about the trading relationship.

Is it flavoured?

No. Vanilla and cocoa powder are roast descriptors. Stumptown is a specialty roaster and this is not a flavoured coffee.

Where is it from?

Central and South America. No country, farm or altitude is published.

How does it compare to Hair Bender?

Simpler and softer. Hair Bender spans three continents for complexity; this stays in one region for approachability.

How much coffee is it?

Two 12oz bags. Finish an opened bag within two weeks, per the maker.
