Best Bean-to-Cup Machines 2026

The best bean-to-cup coffee machines grind, brew and froth milk at one button, and are sold in the US as super automatic espresso machines. After the first year what matters is whether the brew group comes out for cleaning, how many grind settings there are and how easily the milk system stays clean.

More bean-to-cup machine guides

How to choose a bean-to-cup machine

A bean-to-cup machine grinds, doses, brews and throws away the puck for you, and on the milk models it steams and pours as well. You are not buying espresso skill. You are buying the removal of it, and the machines differ almost entirely in how much they remove and how much work they hand back.

That is why the price range here is so wide. The cheapest machine on this page is $399.50 and the dearest is $4,499, and both of them will put a cappuccino in a cup at one press. What the extra buys is a better grinder, a milk system you do not rinse by hand, and a machine that tells you when it needs attention.

Where the 100 points go

All rating rules →

8 of the 8 criteria are explained below; the rest link to how they are scored.

16/ 100Drinks & Milk System

The milk system is 16 of the 100 points, the biggest single difference

Milk is where these machines separate. A machine with an integrated carafe makes a latte macchiato while you stand still. A machine with a steam wand makes you the barista again, which is the job you were trying to avoid.

Milk system type

An integrated carafe or a two-part system like Philips' LatteGo scores highest, an automatic frother next, and a manual pannarello wand lowest. The Gaggia Anima and the Magnifica Start both use a manual frother, and both sit near $700 - the wand is how the price gets there.

One-touch drinks

Full marks at eight or more. The spread on this page runs from two on the Gaggia Anima to 51 on the JURA Z10.

No milk system at all is a real option

The JURA E4 is $1,339.99 and makes no milk drinks whatsoever. If you drink espresso and long black, that is not a missing feature, it is a machine that spent your money on the grinder instead.

15/ 100Grinder & Grind Control

The grinder is 15 points, and it is the part you cannot change later

Everything downstream is fixed by the grind. A conical burr set is the one component you can never upgrade without buying another machine.

Burr material

Steel and titanium score full marks, ceramic scores three quarters, plastic scores nothing. Most of this category is ceramic - Philips, Gaggia and Bosch all use it - and the JURA E8 is one of the few publishing a stainless conical set.

Grind steps

Twelve or more takes full points, and the range here is real: five on the Gaggia Anima, seven on the JURA machines, ten on the Gaggia Cadorna, twelve on the Philips pair and thirteen across the De'Longhi line.

15/ 100Cleaning & Upkeep

Cleaning is 15 points, because it is the bill you pay weekly

This is the criterion buyers underweight and then live with. A bean-to-cup machine makes a wet puck every cup and pushes milk through a pipe every latte.

A removable brew group

Worth four points on its own, and it decides whether cleaning is a rinse under the tap or a service booking. Philips, Gaggia, Bosch and the Dinamica all publish one. Where a machine has no published answer it scores nothing here, which is deliberate: an unanswered cleaning question is a cost you discover in month three.

Dishwasher-safe milk parts, an automatic rinse, and a descaling indicator

Together these are worth six points. They are not glamorous and they are the difference between a machine you keep and a machine you resent.

12/ 100Ease of Use

Ease of use is 12 points, and the bypass matters more than the screen

A pre-ground bypass

Two points for a second chute that takes ground coffee, so one decaf at nine at night does not mean emptying the hopper.

Strength steps

Five or more takes full marks. It is the adjustment you actually reach for, far more often than the grind dial.

12/ 100Capacity & Refills

Capacity is 12 points, and it decides how often you stand at the sink

Bean hopper350 g

350 g or more takes full marks. The spread runs from 150 g on the Gaggia Anima to 300 g on the Cadorna and the Eletta Explore.

Water tank

1.8 litres or more takes full marks. The Dinamica holds 1.1 litres and the Z10 holds 2.4, which across a working week is a different machine to live with even though both make the same drink.

12/ 100Value for Money

Value for money is 12 points, scored against the peers

Value is measured against the other machines in this category, not against the maker's own price. A machine is not good value because it is cheap and not poor value because it is dear - it is judged on what it does for the money next to everything else on this page. That is why a $399.50 Bosch can outscore a machine five times its price, and it is the number worth reading last, after you know which milk system you need.

10/ 100Build Quality & Warranty

Build and warranty are 10 points, and one warranty is not what the banner says

Body material

Stainless steel and brass take full marks, aluminium and ceramic three quarters, plastic least. Worth knowing before you pay: the JURA E8 publishes a plastic housing and the Z10 publishes aluminium front panels.

Warranty, and read the second half of it

De'Longhi advertises an "industry leading 3 year warranty", and the specification underneath is two years plus one more if you register the product. JURA's is two years or 6,000 brewings, whichever comes first - a household making eight coffees a day reaches that in about two years, but a small office reaches it far sooner, and at that point the years left on the certificate are worth nothing.

8/ 100Kitchen Fit & Noise

Kitchen fit and noise are 8 points, and cup clearance is the one to measure

Cup clearance135 mm

135 mm or more takes full marks, and this is the specification that catches people out. The JURA E6's spout tops out at 111 mm; the Eletta Explore reaches 158 mm. If you drink from a tall travel tumbler, that difference decides whether your cup fits under the machine at all.

A published footprint

Three points simply for stating the dimensions, because a machine that does not is a machine you cannot plan a worktop around.

What to know before you pick one.

Bean-to-cup machine FAQs

Is a bean-to-cup machine better than an espresso machine?

It is better at being consistent and worse at being adjustable. A bean-to-cup machine grinds, doses and tamps identically every time, which is exactly what most people want on a weekday morning. An espresso machine lets you change the dose, the tamp and the shot time, which is what you want if the making is the hobby. Buy the bean-to-cup if you want the coffee; buy the espresso machine if you want the process.

How much should I spend on a bean-to-cup machine?

The machines on this page run from $399.50 to $4,499 and all of them brew at one press. Spending more buys a better grinder, a milk system you are not rinsing by hand, and a machine that tells you when it needs descaling. Decide the milk question first, because it is worth 16 of the 100 points and it is the thing you cannot add later - a manual frother is a manual frother for the life of the machine.

Does a removable brew group actually matter?

Yes, and it is the question makers are quietest about. Every cup leaves a wet puck of grounds behind, and a brew group that lifts out is rinsed under the tap in a minute. One that does not has to be cleaned in place with tablets and cycles, and eventually serviced. It is worth four points on its own here for that reason.

What is the difference between ceramic and steel burrs?

Ceramic burrs stay sharp longer and cost less to make, which is why most of this category uses them - Philips, Gaggia and Bosch all do. Steel burrs cut more cleanly and handle oily dark roasts better, and they score higher here for that. In practice the number of grind steps matters more to your cup day to day than the material does.

Will a tall cup fit under a bean-to-cup machine?

Check the cup clearance before you buy, because the range is wider than people expect. The JURA E6 tops out at 111 mm and the De'Longhi Eletta Explore reaches 158 mm. A standard mug is fine on either. A travel tumbler is not, and there is no way to work around it except brewing into something smaller and pouring.

What is the best bean-to-cup machine?

Based on our research across the category, Philips 4300 LatteGo is our editor's pick for bean-to-cup machine. Home users who want one-touch fully automatic espresso and milk drinks with minimal cleanup

Is there a cheap bean-to-cup machine worth buying?

Bosch 300 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine is the least expensive we have reviewed in this category at $399.50. Cheapest is not the same as best value: the review says which corners were cut.

How much does a bean-to-cup machine cost?

The ones we have reviewed run from about $399.50 to $4499. Price tracks build material, capacity and how much of the specification the maker publishes.
